——-Running a hand through your hair, a sigh escapes you.
Today has been long enough. Especially after running back and forth through the hospital.
Because it seems like every single one of your patients has had a problem.
Either if it's after surgery, or right before it. Second thoughts, or feeling like they're dying.
Or, on a few occasions, they are dying. Then suddenly, you're doing everything in your power to save them.
You thought it was only you having this problem. But, one of the times you were passing April, you realized you weren't.
Her head was stuffed in her hands as she sat there. Her shoulders were heavy, and she was there unmoving.
Unfortunately, you couldn't stop and ask her what the problem was. Or even attempt to cheer her up.
You were needed across the hospital. So you left her where she was and went to go do other things.
Anyway, now that you have a couple of seconds to yourself. You can finally seek out April and cheer her up.
If you're not too late that is. Although, it wasn't too long ago. But she could've moved on in the time that you were away.
Walking up to a nurse station, you lean on the counter slightly, "Have you seen Doctor Kepner?"
The nurse shakes her head, looking up for a moment, "Haven't seen her at all today."
Your eyebrows draw together slowly as slowly piece things together, "Not even to check up on her patients?"
"Nope."
"Huh," You bite your lip, before tapping your hand against the counter, "Thanks."
She nods, and you turn and start to the elevator. It isn't like her to not check up on her patients every now and then.
She's a caring person and would go back to see if they're doing okay. Hell even you do that.
April and you have a lot in common. Which is probably why you two get along so well. Because you get each other.
Pressing the elevator button to go down, you decide you might as well check the "break room". She might've decided that she wanted to have her break down somewhere more private.
The doors open, and a couple of nurses come out. Which reveals that Jackson is in the elevator.
Sliding in, you press your fingers to the button, before turning to Jackson, "Have you seen April lately? I'm looking for her."
He makes a face like he's trying to remember. Then it lights up, and he nods, "I saw her briefly. I tried to ask her about one of our patients, but she ignored me and continued walking."
"Where towards? The break room?"
He nods, and you sigh in relief slightly, placing your head on the wall behind you.
"Why? Is something wrong?" He asks and you shake your head.
"No, I just wanted to see why she hasn't been checking up on her patients today. I also saw her earlier and I didn't have the time to stop and talk." You shrug, "It's nothing."
The elevator doors open again, and it's on your floor. You wave goodbye to Jackson, before heading out.
So it seems that April was actually pretty upset. It's probably over one of her patients during surgery. You've had a couple of those days where you knew the patient well. But when they go into surgery, they don't make it out.
Those days are the worst.
Taking a turn, you see the room. And through the window, you see that April is sitting on one of the couches.
When you finally get into the room, April looks up from her spot. Her eyes are a bit red, and she quickly rubs them to get rid of her tears.
"Hey April, you feeling alright?" You ask she nods quickly, offering you a smile.
"Yeah! I'm- I'm fine, it's just... one of my patients during surgery didn't make it." She admits, rubbing her eye again.
Going over to her, you sit down beside her and open your arms. She laughs for a second, before hugging you.
You two pull away from the hug when the door swings open. And it reveals a doctor unfamiliar to you.
"I trusted you with my patient." He starts, coming into the room, without shutting the door, "You promised me that she would come out."
Your face scrunches up, as you look from the doctor to April, "Excuse me? Who the hell —"
"Shut up." He barks, which makes your face deadpan, "You'll pay for this April. Specifically the parents, they'll have your head for this —"
April's hands are now clasped together as she looks down at them. She doesn't say anything back, but you do.
Who is this guy anyway?
"Actually," You start, jumping to your feet, "Doctor, you should know that promises don't mean shit in a hospital."
"Who —"
"Shut up," You mock, "I'm not done yet. If you thought you could've done a better job, like save the patient. Then I guess you should have done it, right? So stop blaming April for doing her best inside of the OR. And instead, go blame yourself somewhere else for being such an asshole to a woman who just lost a patient."
"It wasn't even her patient." He snaps.
Taking a deep breath, you try not to lose your composure. But it's so hard with this idiot here. Why is it always the assholes?
"You're obviously fucking blind," You snap back, "Can't you see she's upset? Or are you overlooking that so you have an excuse to come and berate her? Because it really looks like it, doesn't it? I should go to Miranda and have you fired. How do you even work in a place like this with absolutely zero compassion?"
He doesn't say anything, which makes you raise your eyebrows, "What? Cat got your tongue or are you finally coming to the realization of what a jackass you are? Because if it's the latter one, apologize, and then get the hell out. And don't return."
Crossing your arms, you step away from April, so he can see her. You raise your eyebrows, expecting him to apologize. And it's fulfilled pretty quickly.
"I'm sorry." He grumbles, before turning around and walking out.
"Don't let the door hit you on the way out!" You yell after him, which makes his pace speed up.
When he's finally out of the room, you go over to the door and shut it. On your way back to April, she starts laughing.
"Thank you, (Y/n)." She says, looking up at you between giggles, "That was nice of you."
"Did you see his face on the way out?" You ask, which makes her nod and laugh a bit harder.
You join in with her, sitting down on the couch, "You're welcome, April. Anytime."
