It was already one in the morning, Taehyung laid awake, facing the ceiling and occasionally taking glances of the two sleeping bunnies. The smaller of the two had his face snuggled on the other's chest while the older cuddled him in his arms.
The blonde wondered if Jungkook also did this with his stepsister. He really couldn't imagine what it would be like to get separated from his loved ones. Loosing Jaegeun would be like taking a big part of him away. Seokjin, his older brother, was like a second parent to him along with his boyfriend. His parents were almost never present but that didn't mean that he didn't love them. He wouldn't be the same with one of them missing.
Which got him thinking.
What was Jungkook like before the divorce? Was he the same? Was he more open and energetic? Was he different?
Sighing, the boy decided to get a glass of water to help clear his thoughts.
"I'm sure they wouldn't mind." He mumbled to himself as he sat up from the bed, careful not to wake up the sleeping bundle, before getting up and slipping out of the room.
He sneaked into the kitchen, being as quiet as possible so he wouldn't disturb Ms.Jeon, but to his surprise, she was sitting on the kitchen counter with a cup in hand. She looked deep in thought, her eyes were a bit puffy and red.
"Ms.Minseo, are you alright?" Taehyung slowly approached her with a concerned tone and the woman flinched a little when he placed a hand on her shoulder. He quickly retracted it, embarrassed that he didn't ask to comfort her first.
"Oh, it's just you." Ms.Jeon said in relief as she wiped her eyes with the back of her sleeve to get rid of any evident tear. "Taehyung, honey, why are you still awake?"
"I just have a lot in my mind." He shrugged. "I'm guessing it's the same for you?" She nodded, sniffling a bit.
"I still have some left over tea, would you like some?" She offered, already getting off of the counter and pouring Taehyung one without giving him the time to answer. "You can sit on the counter, sweetie."
"Thank you, Ms.Minseo." The boy gladly hopped on the counter while childishly swinging his legs.
"I thought I've told you to drop the formality." She scolded him.
"I know but I feel disrespectful if I just call you by your first name." The blonde shyly reasoned, the middle aged lady weakly laughing at him.
"You're a great kid, you know that?" Ms.Jeon said after a while, handing him the cup of tea before hopping on the counter across from the boy. "I'm glad my son has you. He's lucky to have a friend like you."
"It's more like the other way around."
They sat in silence, sipping their tea. It wasn't uncomfortable. If anything it was nice to know the feeling of having a parent figure around.
"So any plans for Christmas this week?" She questioned, trying to start a conversation.
"Not really." He responded with a disappointed smile. "My older brother's going to take a break from work with his boyfriend for it so he's coming home on Christmas Eve this Monday to spend the holiday with me and Jaegeun. My parents are too consumed with work so they'll just find an overly used excuse again of why they couldn't come."
"I'm sorry you don't get to celebrate Christmas with your parents, Taehyung." The raven haired lady apologized, even when she had nothing to do with it. Her doe eyes, which had a strong resemblance with Jungkook's, were now filled with pity for the young teenager. "You, your brothers, and your brother's boyfriend are all welcomed to have dinner here with us on Christmas."
"Oh no! I wouldn't want to ruin your bonding time with Jungkook!" Taehyung whisper yelled in protest.
"Don't be silly. You wouldn't ruin anything. Trust me." The woman assured with a smile. "I'd love to have you guys over! Jimin and his family's already set on having dinner with us and you can invite your other friends over."
"Are you sure, Ms.Minseo?"
"Of course!"
"Okay, I'll talk to Jungkook about it. Thank you, Ms.Minseo. Jungkook's lucky to have you as a mom." The blonde smiled and pulled her into a loose embrace when he saw her hesitantly nod. "Don't worry. I'm sure he'll come through sooner or later."
"I hope so." She sighed, patting his back before carefully climbing off of the counter. "It's already late, you should go back to bed. I'll clean up so you don't have to worry. Goodnight, sweetheart."
Taehyung retreated back to Jungkook's bedroom, holding the doorknob tightly to make sure the door wouldn't make too much noise when it shut. He slowly made his way back to his spot on the bed, careful not to trip on anything from the darkness of the room, his only light source being the window that provided the night's beautiful glow.
He slipped back under the comforters and shifted every now and then to find the right spot. Once he found it, his eyelids instantly grew heavy. And after a blink or two, sleep devoured his distraught thoughts.
