It was a hard day for Frank. Though he can admit, every day was hard for him but this one in particular was even harder. It started out normally; with him struggling to buckle his gas mask around his face. Usually he'd sleep with the damn thing on to keep from inhaling too much radiation and dying in his sleep but the fucker was uncomfortable. Then again, death, he thought to himself. Would be very much preferable.

Now while scrounging for a cheap place to shop for food, he suddenly recalled leaving his wallet at home-again and was too lazy to go back and get it. Again. See, Frank had a pattern to go by. A routine. Eat, struggle, survive, sleep, and repeat. The only problem was that Frank was sort of an idiot and survival has been getting tougher with the Black Masks running around.

Not only that; but his gay friend Pete (Gay as in 'I' know your my friend Frank, but im still going to hit on you.' Kind of gay.) But his friend Pete had mysteriously vanished overnight and had been gone for presumably a month. Pete hadn't been the smartest of men and Frank knew with a sinking feeling that he had somehow gotten himself killed.

Stuffing his gloved hands into his pockets, Frank began to walk the decomposing city nervously. Without Pete, he was as lonely as the rest of the citizens; a frightened child caught under the trap of a nuclear war that had damaged civilization at it's finest.

Now those who couldn't own masks died without them and people wandered the streets without hope and in fear of the new government which had first risen as a hope and drowned them in fear. They had been promised a new life but received a Hell on Earth.

Most people had taken the easy way out. Killing themselves before anyone else could. But others like Frank chose to hold on, believing that life would get better and someone new would choose to rise to power and save them all.

Of course those were only mere dreams and Frank was clinging to a thread which couldn't support him for much longer. He was slowly withering away like the rest of them and would soon collapse to his knees, begging for death.

He tugged at his mask and went to work. Finding food was often dangerous if you were going through men's trash. Often it would be tainted with the air that had killed many. Frank though, was desperate. His stomach was growling and clawing at him. He'd been dealing with hunger since birth and today was no different. He doubted with even the money he had at home; he would be able to eat a decent meal.

The garbage cans in the alley he searched through seemed to already been dug clean of any nourishment. "Fucking figures." He muttered to himself as he kicked one of the trash bins.

Although Frank was young; going onto twenty three, he wouldn't be able to do what he had once done for food at the age of eight. No one would take pity unless you were thirteen or younger. He knew that for a fact.

Maybe it would have been better if he had a family. If he chose to stick with his friend Pete like the other man had suggested. But Frank had always carried a high value of himself and thought him to be capable of doing things on his own. That of course, was wrong and he knew that now as he grew older.

No one could survive in a chemical wasteland alone. No one could avoid the Black Masks without help. Everyone needed a friend once in a while. Unfortunately Frank had lost the only friend he had and was left alone in a world too large for his small existence.

"Hey! Trash boy!" Frank jumped up, whipping not only his head but his entire body towards the source of the sound. Across from him was another man; his hair a wild mess and he couldn't help but wonder how the guy put his gas mask on in the first place. Damn. Frank thought. The guy had a newer version of mask. "Yeah you. You're the only one going through the garbage."
