Frank had fallen in love the moment his eyes met the stranger's and now he just fell when he saw the man thrashing on the ground, trying desperately to free himself from the mask which was, Frank assumed. Choking him.
Frank had never seen something so cruel in his entire life. He wanted desperately to remove the gun from his pocket and let the dying man out of his misery. As he was, already, giving up in his shallow fight. It wasn't something Frank wanted to watch and what he really wanted to do was go back to Ray's and pretend he hadn't just witnessed an injured animal trying to free itself from a trap.
Kicking and squirming, the man's nails made bloody marks on his neck where he tried to tug it off but Frank realized in dismay, the mask needed to be pulled above his head and all the man was doing was helping his suffocation.
People in the background were screaming, shouting, a woman even fell to her knees and started praying while multiple people sobbed. The man fought until his struggles slowed and his hands fell limb. Frank blinked back tears as his body jerked a few times and he went still.
No one did anything, of course. He was dead. What could they do? Frank, not wanting to stare at the deceased man for too long, turned his focus to the Black Masks. Both of which, looked shocked.
Death happened quite often by their hands but Frank knew for certain that neither had witnessed such a needless, terrorizing thing. Sure, people died slowly all the time; but nothing could compare to the fight for the life the man had given or the struggles for breath and the terror in his cries.
Frank was disgusted. Even more so when he glanced at the man's relaxed face, the mask having slid down a little to reveal his parted lips. His eyelids had flutteted closed, much to Frank's relief. He couldn't help but notice how beautiful and serene it was. No one, he thought. Should be that beautiful at death.
The Black Masks; as the bastards they were, turned away and left as the audiance mourned over the unmasked man.
Frank hadn't seen him before. In fact, he was positive no one had seen him before. He could tell by the whispers of the crowd and parents asking parents if he belonged to them. No one knew his name, no one knew his identity. He was a complete mystery.
"Frank! Frank! What the hell...Fuck is that kid dead?" Ray asked. Before Frank could answer, a cry of shock and terror escaped from Mike as he looked over Ray's shoulder. "Gee! Oh fuck, Ray. That's him! That's my brother!" Ray leaned over to grab Mike but was unfortunately too late. The kid was pushing past the crowd and in the clearing within seconds, collapsing to his knees in front of Gee.
"Oh shit." Frank followed Ray to the clearing as well, avoiding staring at the man's body while Mike tugged and pulled at the mask. "It's not coming off!" He cried. "Move!" Frank ordered, shoving him to the side. Gee's mask was a similar version to his own, fairly new but as seen previously: very dangerous.
Not having much of a choice, Frank pulled a pocket knife from his pocket, choosing to cut the mask rather than attempt to pull it off. Not only would it cause more damage to Gee's body, but the struggle would only upset Mike more. "Come here, Mike." Ray said as Frank sawed at the leather straps. He glanced over his shoulder for a second to watch the kid sob into Ray's shoulder. Turning back, he finished cutting Gee's mask off his face and pulled it away before tossing the useless thing to the ground.
Even though the gesture would be useless, he still held two fingers against Gee's neck to check for a pulse. Pulling back quickly, Frank turned back towards the two, his heart hammering from what he had felt. "Mikey, get me a mask." Mike's sobs stopped for a split second. "What?" "He's still alive, dammit! Give me a mask!"
