Chapter Thirty-Five: Why am I defending him?

"If you're here to lecture me and bring me back, save your breath because I'm not leaving," I told them in a bored tone.

Kevin puts a hand on my shoulder and turns me towards him with a smile on his face.

"We just want to talk, mainly Owen-"

"Hey!" Owen cries out, licking the ice cream off the bottom of his straw from the milkshake.

I snort at him and then stare at my folded hands, starting to push back the overgrown cuticles.

The table becomes quiet until the waitress drops off our food and then Owen speaks.

"I won't talk about Peter and Elise, but I want to say that you've grown on all of us, Bailey. You're our only girlfriend who doesn't try to sleep with the crew and then brag about it, and that means a lot to me and also Peter," He starts.

Cute.

My fingers grab a few french fries from the plaid plate and then I stare at him with a mouth full of food.

"You're attractive, yes, and do I sometimes wanna bang you in the most random places, yes-"

I hold up a hand and close my eyes.

"Stay on the topic please," I choke out, trying to swallow the french fry.

"His point is that we like you, and we'd hate for you to get sent back by Mrs. Kingston because of some petty issues you have with Elise..." Kevin trails.

I start to forget the whole reason I ran away in the first place and then sigh loudly.

"That was a very touching speech..." I say, and look up to see their hopeful faces.

This was tough.

Did I really want to continue my study abroad at this point?

I was well aware of the fact that I was being childish and immature by running away over the smallest thing, but I was also confused with my feelings.

"I'm sorry," I mumble, knowing my answer and not wanting to say it.

"I just don't think I'm ready to put myself back in that kind of environment,"

It was true.

Peter was sending me mixed signals and was bad at communicating his feelings, Elise wasn't even a problem anymore other than the fact that she knew who I was and would threaten me.

But at the same time, I wanted to go back to Peter's house and give him the biggest hug and apologize to him and his mom.

"Bailey, you have to understand-" Owen tried to speak but I cut him off.

"-No I think its very funny how Peter hasn't made the effort to speak to me in person and stopped blowing up my phone when I left him on read," I scoffed.

Kevin cleared his throat.

"We told him to give you space and to stop obsessing,"

My mouth formed an 'O' shape and then I rolled my eyes.

"This is between him and me... he's the one who called me a slut, not you two," I say, pointing at them.

"Wha- he called you a slut?!" Owen exclaimed and then slammed his hand against the table making the plates bounce a little.

The waitress jumped in shock and then squinted her eyes at him.

"Sorry," Owen called over to her and she walked away with a look of disgust.

I sucked in a deep breath and then pushed my empty plate away, crossing my arms and then staring at my shoes.

"If he called you a slut I'd understand why you're mad..." Kevin trailed softly.

"It was indirectly though," I defend.

Why am I defending him?

"Well then one, he probably didn't know that was gonna come out the way it did and two he also didn't mean it," Owen explained, pouting his lower lip.

I huffed, just wanting to be left alone at this point.

"Peter's not the brightest if you haven't noticed," Kevin joked, bumping my shoulder making me smile a little.

"Come on princess come back with us, and we can work things out," He begged.

I still didn't want to...

"Or at least stay with Kevin for a little longer, and we can try to smooth things out with them!" Owen added.

I pursued my lips thinking about how if I stayed with Kevin, I wouldn't have to see Peter but that means I'd risk the chance of Elise snooping around.

But if I didn't I would be back on the street with nowhere to go.

"Fine," I mumbled.

Both the boys gasped and then high five each other with big grins.

"Okay just put your stuff in the car and I'll be right out!" Kevin cheers.

I give him a small smile and scoot out of the booth, grabbing my bag and dashing out of the cafe.

The plan was to steal Kevin's car and drive off to somewhere they wouldn't find me.

Which was anywhere tbh.

So I tossed my shit in the back and then got into the driver's seat, ready to start the ignition.

Problem was, there were no keys.

I groaned, slamming my fists against the wheel and then rubbing my face in anger.

"Fuuuck!" I yell, just as the door is swung open.

Kevin stares at me with a bored face while Owen looks amused.

"Whatcha doin' there Hail Bail?" He asks me, holding the door open.

I roll my eyes and slide out the seat, brushing past him to sit in the back seat behind Owen.

They both chuckled and then Kevin started the car taking off down the road.

I guess I really was going to be staying with him till things blew over with Peter.

Maybe I was being over dramatic but I felt like if I went back to the Kingston's they would ship me away...

The only way to find out was to try and contact Peter or Holly to apologize and hope she wouldn't call my mom.
