Luke's first reaction was to laugh. It wasn't what me nor Harry had expected as we sat at a picnic bench in the corner of the park away from anyone else. His laughter began to die down when he met our serious stares.
"What?" he asked. "But vampires don't exist."
"They do," I replied calmly, tilting my head to one side and revealing my faded bite marks to Luke. He leaned over the table to take in what I was showing him. I glanced at Harry who was chewing on his lip. "It's okay," I said. "Show him."
Harry looked at me long and hard before showing Luke his bite marks. He had always been hesitant towards his marks as I had been the one to inflict them on him. He felt as though showing them off made me look like a beast, but that wasn't true. Because of his decision to be turned, we knew we had forever together.
Luke sat back again and stared distantly ahead of himself to understand it all. "So I'm half vampire?" he asked.
I gave a small nod. "That's the reason for your cravings to kill."
He turned to Harry. "So that means you're half vampire, being Samuel's child and all?"
I turned to Harry expecting a nod, but instead he shrugged. "Before Rosie turned me, I never had the want to kill anyone or had any traits of what Samuel had before Rosie turned me. Maybe I just supressed them."
I kept my gaze on Harry for a little while. He was angry and aggressive before I turned him, but he never wanted to kill anyone. He just wanted to protect people which was something Samuel rarely cared about.
"There's more," Luke continued, looking from Harry to me and back to Harry again. "When I was younger I felt like my mind was powerful. It was as though I could get into people's heads to see what they were thinking. It sounds crazy, I know."
I suddenly leaned forward in interest. "It's not crazy. Tell us more."
Luke took a deep breath. "It was as though whatever I wanted them to think, they would. If I wanted someone to like me, suddenly they were my best friend. I got so addicted to it that I started controlling how people thought all the time. I got everyone I met to like me. I got all the best grades at school and everyone would always praise me. I loved it, but eventually it got annoying. People were following me everywhere, begging me to be their friend and spending every minute with me. I suddenly didn't want everyone liking me, so they started to hate me. I didn't fully understand how it worked so I didn't know how bad it would get." Luke lifted up his shirt to show his left hip. "I was suddenly stabbed. It was the middle of the day, at school actually. In the corridor with a hundred witnesses. As soon as he stabbed me, it wore off and I wasn't controlling his mind anymore. To this day he has no idea why he did it to me. I transferred school as soon as possible and haven't tried to control anyone's mind since."
Despite what Luke said, I reached out to hold his hand on the table. "We don't judge you. I'm glad you knew when to stop. Samuel didn't have that strength. He would use it to hurt other people. This gift is a part of you, Luke. Maybe one day you can find a way to use it to make people happy, genuinely happy."
Luke gave a small smile before I pulled my hand back. "There's one more thing."
"Shoot," I said.
Luke sighed. "I sometimes get these visions, mostly from the past. They're blurry and I can't make them out, but I can sense that they've already happened and they all link back to me. It's so confusing sometimes."
I smiled. "If you want we can always help you control your abilities," I suggested before feeling a sharp elbow dig into my side. I turned to Harry. "What?"
Harry sighed before grabbing my arm and pulling me from the bench and towards the grass out of ear shot of Luke. "He could be dangerous," Harry murmured down to me. "Our priorities should be taking care of Kayla and her abilities and working on our relationship. It's too much to take on."
"He's your brother, Harry. Wouldn't it be nice for Kayla to have an uncle? We're her only family."
"But we're never going to know if he's controlling our minds," Harry spat, his pupils dilating quickly. "I'm not putting my family in that kind of danger."
"So we abandon Luke then? We've just told him he's half vampire with abilities to control minds and a want to kill. He could go crazy with all this information. Shouldn't we be looking out for him?"
Harry sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. He glanced over at Luke who had his head in his hands at the bench. Eventually, Harry murmured, "I hate it when you're right."
I smiled and left a kiss to his cheek before pulling him back over to the bench. Luke looked up at us. "I thought it would be a good idea for you two to get to know each other. I'm going to pick up Kayla from Grace's and I'll see you later?" I asked Harry who was glaring down at me. I gave him a sweet smile as Luke nodded.
"Sure," he said, standing up nearly to the height of Harry, but not quite. The two men looked at each other for a long time trying to work out how much they could trust each other. Eventually, they both sat back down at the bench together and I left them alone.
