I was lying on a sofa, staring up at the white ceiling above me. My heart was beating madly in my chest as I fiddled with my fingers on my stomach nervously. I wasn't sure how to lay. Did I cross my ankles or keep them straight? Did I have my hands by my sides or on my stomach? As I thought deeply about this, my brother returned.
"Are you sure this is going to work?" I asked.
He sat himself down on the chair near the sofa and looked straight at me. "Of course. Since I can see visions, yours are likely to be clearer than if you did this with Rosie." He sat back in the chair. "Now, are you ready?"
Despite shaking my head, I eventually murmured, "Yes."
"Okay," Luke said. "Just lay back and make sure you're comfortable. A lot's going to be happening in your head and so you want to make sure your body is completely at rest or you're likely to lash out."
I nodded and let all of the tension drain away. I rolled my head to the left and then to the right before closing my eyes.
"When you're ready give me a small nod," Luke said.
After a long sigh, I finally nodded my head and focused on what was going on in my mind.
"Right, before we started this I asked you to think of a time in your childhood that was perhaps blurry or didn't make a lot of sense. Now I want you to really try and picture that moment. Focus on what you can see and try to expand it. What colours can you see? How old were you? Were you alone or was someone with you?"
I knew that my mind was really struggling to find the memory. I had blocked out so much of my childhood that everything was a blur, but there was a distinctive sound that kept on repeating in my head. I couldn't see what had happened, instead all I could do was hear it.
Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud.
Then it fell silent. My eyes finally opened and the first thing I saw was a toy car in my hand. I looked up to see a fireplace in front of me and I quickly realised I was in my childhood living room. Light shone in from the patio doors and I recognised the soft carpet below me, but I couldn't ignore the deafening silence.
I let the toy car fall out of my grasp, barely hearing it hit the soft carpet between my legs. I hated the silence. I hated being alone. So, I pushed myself up to my feet and made my way out of the living room and into the hallway. I began whimpering in fright and loneliness, calling out for my mummy. That's when I saw her lying at the bottom of the stairs. Her head and shoulders were on the wooden flooring of the hallway, but the rest of her body was sprawled out on the stairs. Her foot was at an awkward angle and a pool of red liquid was by her head. I shook her roughly, but she didn't respond. I began to cry louder than before, stomping my foot and pulling on my mum's cardigan to try and wake her. I was scared and alone: something that had always haunted me since.
Through my cries, I could hear heavy breathing. I thought it was my mum, but she remained unmoving. Though my tears, I glanced around me for anyone until I realised it was coming from above me. I looked up the stairs to find a dark figure stood there, his fists clenched and his chest rising and falling heavily. I recognised his eyes and instantly cried out for him.
"Daddy!"
My eyes shot back open and I sat up. I realised how sweaty I had become and how heavy I was breathing. I could hear Luke asking if I was okay, but the memories were replayed in my head. My mum lying there helpless, my dad's angry eyes as he stood at the top of the stairs. He had pushed her, deliberately causing her so much pain. My chest was tight and my eyes were full of tears.
