He woke up at 5 AM the next morning, and he could feel that he was still smiling from his dream. It took him a minute to float off of cloud nine, but when he remembered reality, he was right back up there in the clouds.
Bethany James is my girlfriend. He wanted to squeal like a little girl. Seriously, there was a bubble of happiness stuck in his chest and he was afraid that if he didn't let it out, it would explode in there and his skin would turn some really happy color, like pink, or yellow. He didn't want to be pink or yellow!
He wasn't making any sense. He laughed aloud, probably waking Matt in the top bunk. He didn't care. He pulled the curtain back, and climbed from his bed, stretching and looking down at himself.
Oh, shirt, Hunter. You need a shirt. He pulled a shirt over his head and straightened his pajama pants, then nearly skipped over to Bethany's bunk. It's too early for this, Hunter. What are you doing?
Shut up, okay? I know it's early. I'm going to spend some quality time with my girlfriend! He sighed happily, thinking that. He was smiling like an idiot when he climbed the steps to Beth's bunk, and pulled the curtain back near her head.
She was fast asleep, as he'd known she would be. She slept beautifully, with her hair splayed behind her on her pillow, her nostrils flaring gently with every breath, and her arms wrapped around another pillow. He laughed, though it wasn't funny. She's mine. She's MINE now. He laughed again, and leaned forward to kiss her cheek, just because he could.
She stirred, and he propped his chin on his folded arms, hoping that she'd wake up and look at him. Hoping that she'd be smiling as brightly as he was when she had returned from unconsciousness. He whispered close to her ear, hoping she'd wake up to the sound.
Bethany smiled happily and snuggled closer to her bunk. She must still be dreaming. Hunter had come over to her bunk and kissed her cheek. He whispered, "I'm so lucky, Bethany James," right next to her ear, tickling her skin and making a ripple of warmth shiver down her spine. She kept her eyes closed, not wanting to lose the dream yet. It was so nice. It felt so real.
Hunter laughed at her again, seeing her eyes flutter, then press shut, like she was trying to remain asleep. She's so adorable. How did I get her to be mine? I'm not worth this girl. She snuggled closer to the sheets, and he leaned forward to whisper to her again.
She heard him laugh, that quirky, adorable laughter that she loved so much. Then she felt him move nearer, and he whispered to her again. "Wake up, Beth. I want to see you."
Was that....? Her eyes flew open, and the smile on her face was suddenly painfully big. She wasn't dreaming! He's here. He's waking you up, Beth. He...he kissed you on the cheek! Whoa....I have a boyfriend. Hunter Hayes is my boyfriend. Don't freak out, Beth, don't freak out. What time is it?
Hunter laughed again, seeing the myriad emotions run across her beautiful face. She was at first surprised, then blissfully happy, and now she was a little confused, and by the way she was frantically searching for her phone, he figured she was wondering about the time.
"It's 5 AM," he whispered, propping his chin back on his folded arms and staring intently at her.
She laughed quietly, staring at him. He's so cute. Does he even know how cute he is? How on earth is this boy mine? OH MY GOSH, He's MINE. Her smile grew impossibly wide, even as the tiny warning in her heart echoed weakly. She had decided last night that she was going to ignore that Devil's voice. She was going to trust Hunter. He had done nothing to make her believe she couldn't trust him. She was going to at least try to give him the benefit of a doubt.
