The Girl Who's Riling Me Up: Hunna! GUESS WHAT JUST HAPPENED

Hunter sighed. I'll bet I already know what just happened.

That Flashlight Guy: What?

Riley screeched again, jumping up and down a little in the public bathroom of her college. She couldn't stop smiling, and all the other girls milling around were looking at her like she'd lost her mind. She left the bathroom and rushed to her dorm before typing a reply to Hunter.

The Girl Who's Riling Me Up: I just got the most AMAZING PHONE CALL OF MY LIFE. I got a

Hunter raised an eybrow. What?

Riley stopped typing mid-sentence, too excited to write it down.

The Girl Who's Riling Me Up: Can I call you? THIS IS SO EXCITING. WHAT ARE YOU DOING? I'M CALLING YOU NOW PICK UP.

Hunter said something to the man working the soundboard, and took off the bulky headphones he was wearing. He moved away from the microphone he was using to record his vocals and slid his finger against his phone to answer the incoming call.

"Hunter?" He laughed. Who else?

"It's me." He tried to sound more enthusiastic, but he just couldn't.

"I GOT A RECORD DEAL WITH ATLANTIC RECORDS. I mean, what even?! I've been here for TWO WEEKS! ONLY TWO! What is my life?" She squealed into the phone, and Hunter moved it away from his ear, chuckling a little. He had to admit, she was really adorable when she was this excited.

"Hunter, I know you did this. So it's probably not even that I'm super talented or anything, but that you're super awesome and set all this up for me and thank you so much you're the best I really appreciate it and just thank you so much you're amazing thank you." She gulped down air, well aware that she'd just rambled and carried on the longest run-on sentence of her life.

"It wasn't me, ba- um, Riley." What the hell, Hunter? Did you just almost call her "babe"? You need to go to sleep, buddy. "Your music is so good." He sighed again, hating how good her music really was. He really needed to get a grip on this whole jealousy thing. There had to be some way to get rid of it...

"And Dann Huff called me! DANN HUFF! He said he wants you and me to work together. Is that okay with you? Is that weird? I mean, I'll say no if you don't want to but I think that'd be really great. Did you know I'm your opening act? Yeah, I'm going on tour with you and at the same time I'll be doing a radio tour of my own and they want us to shoot a music video together when we have a duet done. Hunter, I think the label is trying to set us up. How crazy is that? I'm sorry. I know I'm rambling. I'm done now, I swear."

He laughed again. "No, it's fine, ba-Riley." Again? "I'm excited for you. It will be really cool being on tour with you." I think, anyway. As long as you don't start stealing my fans, like I did with Carrie and Taylor and Rascal.

"Oh, I have to go to class. I'M JUST SO EXCITED THANK YOU SO MUCH. Hunter, I have to go. I'll see you soon. Text me! Love you! Bye!" The line clicked closed.

Hunter stood there, stunned. Did she just say she loved me?

His phone started ringing again, and he picked it up, seeing it was Riley calling him back.

"Hello?"

"Um, Hunter? I'm sorry. I didn't mean to say I loved you...I mean, I'm sure I do in a way, but it's not like that. That was really awkward, I'm sorry. I'm just really excited and really late for class and I can't control my tongue."

"It's okay," he said, smiling despite himself. Why did she have to be so darn cute?

"All right, well, I'm going again. Love you! DANGIT. NO I DON'T LOVE YOU. Goodbye, Hunter!"

He laughed, the corners of his eyes scrunching as he did. I'm in so much trouble. He could just imagine the way her pale cheeks would look splotched in a blush. It was a very attractive picture, if he was being honest.

How can I be so attracted to and so insanely jealous of one person at the same time? What am I supposed to do about it? Do I want her to be on tour with me? I think that'll just complicate things for me...

Wait. Maybe having her on tour with him would be a good thing. How better to make sure that her career didn't surpass his than to have her right under his wing? He could make sure her guitar strings broke or pay one of her band members to intentionally steal the spotlight from her, or...wow. There were so many despicable thoughts running through his mind. He was shocked at himself!

Know what, though? I can do both at once....if I make her mine, she'll trust me more...I'll be with someone I'm innately attracted to, and I'll be able to sabotage her on the down low. Who am I and what have I done with Hunter Hayes?

He pulled his headphones back on and sang into the microphone, "I feel something so right doing the wrong thing."

He'd made his decision. He was going to make her trust him, and he was going to ruin her. He couldn't allow himself to be beat. He couldn't allow her to surpass him. Music was his calling. Was he going to let some girl he met on the street steal that from him?

No way in Hell.
