"All my life, all this time I've been searching for this, and I've finally found it. Yeah, I've finally found it, girl, it's - "
He paused the video. He'd watched it at least a thousand times in the month since Beth had left, and even though he had it memorized, he couldn't stop watching it. It was the only way he ever got to see her.
He ran his fingers over her picture, remembering the day when those raindrops weren't frozen in place, remembering how it felt to kiss her perfect pink lips. Now all he could do was watch it happen on screen and feel this ridiculous jealousy, as though it was some other guy in the video. Someone who wouldn't cheat on her; someone who was completely in love with her. Someone she'd let herself trust and fall for; someone who wouldn't treat her like she was worth nothing.
He used to think he was that guy. He thought he'd be the one to sweep her off her feet and never let her fall again. But no. He was the guy sitting alone in his studio, remembering with regret the time he gave up his only chance to be that guy.
He slammed the lid of his laptop closed, feeling the tears resurfacing. To keep them from spilling over, he pulled his guitar off the nearby rack and grabbed the folder marked "Bethany" from where he'd stashed it.
He let the lyrics pour from his mouth, and his fingertips played the strings with all the pent up anger and hurt and regret and grief he never got to feel.
"I'm the reason you don't trust men.
I'm the shards of your heart that cut your feet as you ran.
I'm the straw that finally broke your back,
But I swear I never meant to let that happen.
I'm the whip that lashed you to shreds.
I'm the acid in your tears that could sear through lead.
And I hope you've moved on, 'cause I'm not even worth it.
Your heart's made of glass. I'm the idiot that broke it.
They tell me that someday the sun will shine,
That this will blow over and I'll be just fine,
But they don't understand how I hate myself
For putting you through this undeserved Hell.
I never wanted anyone to treat you that way,
So it sucks to wake up and know I'm your mistake."The last chords rang through the room, and he closed his eyes and leaned back into the leather. He'd never played with so much emotion before. It was exhausting.
He opened his laptop again, scrolling down to view the recent comments on the still-open YouTube page. His fans were being way too kind about this whole fiasco. Most of them were practically begging him to patch things up with Beth. They all seemed to blame Amanda, though none of them really knew her. While he was thankful for their continued support, he kind of wished they'd realize that he was not blameless in this.
I was there, too, guys. This is my fault, too. Blame me. I did this.
His phone started buzzing in his pocket, and he answered without checking who it was.
"Hello?"
There was a pause, then a reluctant, "...Hi, Hunter."
Hunter's mouth dropped open. "Oh, my God. It's you. Why are you calling me?"
She cleared her throat indignantly. "I have to talk to you. It's important."
Hunter grit his teeth. Ned had expressly said that for the sake of his public image, he could not avoid or otherwise ignore Amanda, but he was so tempted to do just that. He didn't want to deal with her, not ever again. I hate you so much.
"What is it, Amanda?"
"I think we need to talk in person. I'm outside the arena. Let me in."
"No."
She sighed. "Please, Hunter? I wouldn't ask if it weren't really important."
He rubbed his eyes in frustration and kicked the hardwood. Why are you here? I don't want you here. Go away, please!
"Fine. This better be good."
So...yep. Just saying. :D That song though. What did you think?!(:
