Hunter paced furiously in his studio. What does she want now? She's already stolen my life! Is she going to kill me now, too? Come on, then! I don't even care!
Sam peeked his head in the door and Hunter gave him a curt nod.
"Uh, Hunt? Amanda is at the door. Should I let her in?"
"Yeah." Sam closed the door and Hunter returned to making ruts in the floor. Minutes later, he heard a timid knock on the door. He pulled it open roughly, not bothering to hide his scowl.
"What do you want?" he spit rudely.
She winced. "Can I come in?"
He stood aside grudgingly, closing the door behind her. She stood meekly in the middle of the room, but she didn't speak. Hunter's fury was mounting by the second, but he just crossed his arms and waited.
"Guess I'll just say it then," she announced, taking a deep breath and looking him dead in the eyes.
"Hunter, I'm pregnant."
He raised an eyebrow and snorted in disbelief. Right, like I'm going to believe that? And I suppose you're here to tell me I'm the father? You're such a liar!
"Right," he said sarcastically.
She looked at him with an expression of hurt and shock. "Hunter, I'm telling the truth. I really am pregnant."
"So?" he retorted. He knew he was being cruel, but he couldn't get a handle on his anger. This woman had ruined his life! He had every right to be angry! "Are you trying to tell me it's mine?"
She nodded, crossing her arms and beginning to get mad herself. "Well, yeah. I didn't just fly all the way out here to tell you the good news! That's kind of why I'm here, Hunter."
He scoffed derisively. "How can you be sure, Amanda? Kniving little vixen that you are, I'm sure you've snared more unsuspecting men than you can count." She was turning red with anger, but some kind of switch had gone off in Hunter's brain, and he couldn't stop. He didn't care. His emotions were too powerful, too raw, and now was not the time for her to be here. He had no control over his fury, and it just kept pouring out of him with every biting word.
"Tell me, how many relationships have you destroyed this month? How many men have you raped since the awards?" He stepped closer and closer to her as he whispered acidic allegations into her face. "How many lives have you ruined with your insane need for attention?" His voice broke on the word, and he was suddenly screaming at her.
"I can't believe you, Amanda! You are a manipulator! A liar! A con-woman! The most black-hearted, back-stabbing bit -"
He regretted every single one of his words even before her palm slammed into his face. He rubbed his throbbing cheek and felt like the veriest fool.
You've finally figured it out, Hunter. I'm almost proud of you. "I don't even know why I came, Hunter. You don't deserve to be a part of this baby's life."
She stormed past him, watching as his face fell.
She's telling the truth, isn't she? She's pregnant and the baby is mine and now I won't even get to be its father.
"I suggest you find yourself a lawyer, Hunter," she spit. "I'm going to sue you for everything you own. My baby may not have a father, but he will not grow up with nothing. I'll see you in court!"
She slammed the door behind her and rushed off the bus, only letting herself drop the act when she was out of sight.
That went perfectly, she thought, dialing Matt's number to deliver the news. He's such a sucker.
"Hey, babe. He totally bought it. We're good to go."
"It's about time, Amanda. You're lucky it worked. You know what would have happened if you failed."
She gulped, feeling the pit of her stomach drop. "I know Matt. It'll work. I promise."
"It better."
Ooh. Looks like Hunter is in trouble!
I know that everybody saw this coming, but...come on, guys, I've been building to this the entire book! xD Hopefully the last couple of twists still surprise you. I hate writing predicatble things. :/
