Bethany leaned against the wall and stared through the crack, letting her mind mull over what she'd just seen.
I can't let this go without someone seeing it. Amanda needs to be freed. She needs to be stopped! Hunter needs to know he's not the father...but that guy...what about his "people"? Will they make me disappear if I screw this up for him? What do I do? What do I do?
She needed to talk to somebody about this, but who? She couldn't call her mom. She was frantic enough about her being a part of this case without her knowing about this. She couldn't tell Hunter. It was just too tense between them right now, and she couldn't look at him after what he'd said. She couldn't confront Amanda. Who knew what she'd do?
Sam. I need to talk to Sam. Without another thought, she slipped her phone back out of her pocket and punched in a text.
Sam. I need you. Will you come meet me?
She couldn't remember if Sam had been with Hunter when he'd shown up this morning, but she crossed her fingers that he was here. She needed his help, and quick.
Where are you? I'm coming right now.
She sighed in relief and replied:
I'm in the janitor's closet at the end of the hall. In the court house. Please hurry. This is important.
Seconds later, Sam's face appeared in the crack and the door was pushed open. He immediately embraced her, seeing the streaks of makeup down her face and the tell-tale puffiness and bloodshot veins in her eyes. She gladly accepted it, her emotions so raw and exposed that she was grateful for any affection.
"I missed you, Sam," she whispered against his chest, and she laughed, expecting him to laugh too. He didn't. Instead he sighed and hugged her tighter.
"We missed you, too, Beth."
They just stood there for a moment, and Beth just let him hold her and offer her comfort. When he finally pulled away, she stared up at him with wide eyes.
"I need to show you something." He nodded, sensing the seriousness of the moment. Reluctantly, she placed her phone in his hand and pressed the play button, watching his face as he saw the scene unfold. His eyebrows shot up when Matt admitted the doctor had falsified the data, and he gasped when Matt hit her. He looked up at Beth, his entire body rigid.
"Beth, you have to give this to the judge."
"I can't, Sam! Didn't you hear what Matt said? He's dangerous! He's going to hurt somebody! I just know it! What can I do?"
Sam shook his head. "Don't you get it, Beth? More people are going to be hurt if you don't show this to him, yourself included! You are in possession of a very important piece of evidence. You have to do the right thing here, no matter the consequences."
Silence stretched between them, and Beth bit her lip nervously. I want to do the right thing, I do. But I'm scared. And what about Hunter? What will he do?
"Listen, Beth...I know you don't want to hear it, but Hunter's my best friend, so I'm just going to say it anyway. He didn't ever want to hurt you. I've never seen him beat himself up like he's been doing since you left. You have to believe that whatever he may have done, he loves you. More than you know. And if you ever loved him at all, you will give this to the judge. His life is on the line, too, you know."
She nodded, taking the phone back from him. "You're right, Sam. I know you're right." Can it be possible? Can Hunter have been telling the truth? Can I accept him, even if he was?
"Good. Now, let's go, before you lose your nerve."
She followed him out of the closet and took a fortifying breath before crossing the threshold of the court room.
Here we go.
