"You're gorgeous, you're perfect, you're hired!"
Bethany was astonished. She was hired? She hadn't said a word! As the exuberant man sitting by the sound equipment came over to give her a friendly hug, she smiled a confused smile. What had she done?
"But, sir, all I did was walk in!" She laughed nervously, not sure if this man was joking with her or if he'd meant it. Was she really hired already?
"Yes, ma'am, and that's all you needed to do. I've been interviewing women all day and I'm sick of it. You're hired! Now, what's your name, sweetie?" The man sat back in his chair, and gestured that she could do the same, waving towards a tall stool about three feet away in the small, cluttered room. Everywhere she looked were dials and microphones and sundry instruments. She'd never been in a recording studio before, but she really liked the cozy feel that accompanied this one. It was as if the last person to play music in here had left a piece of their soul ringing in the padded walls, and she felt safe sitting there. She could only imagine how amazing it would be to listen to someone recording in the glass-encased box in front of them.
"Uh, Bethany James, sir." She smiled at the back of the man's head, watching as he scrawled a few notes on a sheet of paper. "What's yours?"
The man laughed, the stubble on his cheeks lifting with his smile. He looked over his shoulder and said, "Name's Ned Conner, ma'am. I handle the affairs around here. Of course, you've yet to meet the leading man; he'll be around here soon. I don't suppose you've ever heard of him?"
Bethany nodded her head. Of course she'd heard of him! He was the youngest male country act to top Hot Country songs, he was 22, played various instruments, and was overall a very talented musician. She'd done her research before this interview! She'd even gone so far as to watch a couple of his interviews and had made a point to listen to each of his songs at least once. She had wanted to be prepared in case Ned Conner had asked her a question like this.
"Of course I have. He's very famous, as I'm led to believe." Bethany said this with a smile in her voice, but frowned in frustration in her head. What was his name again? She couldn't remember it. Dang it! What was his name?
"Well, good! You aren't one of those ridiculous, screaming fangirls, are you? I have to tell you, a lot of the others were, and I don't want that kind of noise anywhere near my star."
What's his name, Bethany? What's his NAME?! Bethany wailed at herself. How could she forget such an important detail?! Distracted, she answered simply, "Oh, no, sir. I think the whole concept of fame is ludicrous, so I won't be fangirling over..." WHAT'S HIS NAME! "...him." She smiled at Mr. Conner, hoping he hadn't caught that bit of hesitation.
"All, right, then, Bethany. It'll be good to have you on board. If you'll come with me, I'll show you what we're going to need you to do, and later you'll be able to meet the crew, okay?"
Bethany stood, giving up on remembering his name for the moment. Surely it would come up in conversation or something before she had to meet him. She followed Ned Conner from the room, crossing her fingers that she was qualified for this job. She knew she'd be able to get the hang of it. How hard could it be, right?
Now, if only she could remember his name!
