They exited the bathroom, and Amanda quickly went over to join a dark haired man in the corner. Beth stood there awkwardly for a moment, not honestly sure what to do. Someone tapped her on the shoulder, and she looked up to see a very big, very frightening man dressed in all black. Her eyes went wide, taking in his expansive chest and hard, stone-like arms. What does he want with me?
"Bethany James." It wasn't a question. It was a demand. His deep voice resonated through the room, despite that it was packed with photographers and reporters. His next words bridged no argument. "Follow me."
She did, albeit reluctantly. She didn't know who this guy was, but he radiated danger. Her heart was running a race around her chest and her eyes were going out of focus. She felt like if she blinked, she'd feel a canvas bag on her head or a gun pressed into her back.
He led her outside, and held open the door of a waiting cab. She eyes him warily, but climbed in. How could she argue with a man who could beat her six feet into the ground? He closed the door to the cab, and though it hadn't made a terribly loud noise, she jumped out of her skin. The taxi started rolling without the big man giving the driver an address. She was riding blind. She had no idea where she was going.
How long was he sitting here in this cab? Who are these people? Were they just waiting for me? Why? Where am I going? Will I survive if I jump out now?
Her dread continued as the cab pulled to a stop outside of a hotel. She dashed out of the seat, hoping to escape this terrifying situation before she came to harm. She didn't get but two feet from the cab before she noticed him: the menacing, freight-train of a man from the courthouse.
Oh my God, I'm going to die, she thought as he drew nearer, a look of cold hostility in his eyes. He's going to kill me. How did he get here so fast?
He placed his hand on the small of her back and led her into the hotel. Her blood ran cold and her breathing quickened. I'm going to die. I'm going to die. Why me? What did I do? Who is this guy and what does he want with me? Oh my God. Oh my God. I'm going to die.
They rode the elevator up to the fifth floor, and Beth's brain began going through all the ways this man could kill her.
He could pull a knife and stab me.
He could strangle me with his belt.
He could shoot me in the head.
He could shove me down the elevator shaft.
He could crush my skull in his fist like a bunch of cotton balls.
The elevator stopped and the massive man ushered her into the hallway.
He could drown me in the tub.
He could throw me out the window.
He slid his key into the lock and turned it, pushing her inside with a gentleness that was almost worse than the brutality she was imagining.
She looked around the room frantically, searching for torture devices or gun powder or grenades, or even another human being who would hear her if she screamed. She saw nothing, so she turned around to face the man again, but he was closing the door.
Oh my God, he's going to leave me in here to rot! He's going to find a way to lock the door from the outside, and he's going to walk away and leave me here!
She heard a noise coming from the bedroom off the side and she slammed her back into the wall, staring at the open doorway.
He was a decoy! The real danger is in here, isn't it? SHOW YOUR FACE!
She pressed her back more firmly to the door, frantically searching the room for the threat. Her chest rose and fell quickly, and sweat popped up on her forehead. Her heart was in her throat. There was nothing around her that she could use as a weapon.
Dear Lord. Oh God. I'm not ready to die!
Each carpet-muffled footstep coming from the bedroom echoed painfully in her head, each one increasing her terror.
Oh God, Oh God, I'm going to -
A face appeared in the doorway and a blood-curdling scream tore from her lips.
