Breathing heavily, Beth dropped her sneakers on the floor and collapsed on the hardwood. Her phone was ringing annoyingly on the coffee table just by her head, but she was too exhausted to reach for it.
Her legs were caked with mud, and her clothes and hair were dripping with rain and sweat and tears. Eight miles. It had taken her eight miles of sprinting through the rainstorm to finally stop the tears.
She'd seen him again on the news. His picture was there, along with a candid shot of Amanda climbing aboard the all too familiar, oversized tour bus she used to call home.
"Hunter Hayes being sued for child support," the reporter had said as Bethany dived frantically for the remote and pressed the "Off" button furiously. If there had been any doubt in her mind after the article in People that Hunter had slept with Amanda, it was all gone with that one sentence.
Eight miles of muddy tracks later, and the memory was still waiting for her in this God forsaken vehicle.
Her phone finally stopped ringing, and her breathing eventually calmed. She forced herself of anything but...him.
"One plus one is two. Two plus two is four. Four plus four is eight. Eight plus eight is sixteen," she whispered. Numbers were better than people. Even when numbers were wrong, they didn't hurt like this. You never hear about a woman falling in love with a number who went and got his ex pregnant. Numbers had more decency than that.
Her phone started buzzing loudly again, and she groaned. She rolled over and grabbed it off the table, answering it with a simple swipe. It's probably Rev wondering where I am.
"Hello?" she questioned, rubbing her eyes tiredly.
"Yes, this is Frederick Bailey of Nashville Law and Claims. To whom am I speaking?"
Bethany sat up, instantly terrified. That sounded official. What's going on?
"This is Bethany James, sir." You have the wrong number, right? That's all this is.
"Ah, Ms. James. I'm calling to inform you that you've been called in to testify in a case between a Mr. Hunter Hayes and a Ms. Amanda Felton. You will need to report to - "
"Whoa! Wait!" she practically screamed, her whole body gripped with fear. "What if I don't want to?"
She heard him sigh. I can't. I can't see him. Why would he call me in to testify for him anyway? Does he expect me to be able to forgive him that easily? Does he think I'm going to help him win his case? What is he fighting for anyway? Custody? I can't help him! I can't watch him walk away with a pretty little Amanda clone. I'll be dead in seconds!
"I'm afraid you don't have much choice, Ms. James. Ms. Felton expects you to be there, and this is a serious business. Disputes in the celebrity world are not to be taken lightly. Now, you'll need to appear - "
Wait, she thought, stunned. Did he say Ms. Felton expects me to be there? As in...Amanda Felton?
Frederick Bailey of Nashville Law and Claims rattled off information about the court date, time, place, and everything else she'd need to know, but there was only one piece of information she was concerned with...
Hunter hadn't called her in to testify...
She had to testify for Amanda.
Didn't see that coming, did ya?! ;) It wasn't planned, it just kind of came upon me in the library earlier. (This sentence was written at the time this chapter was, which was NOT today. xD )
So...I'm sorry that my updates are becoming increasingly more obvious...I have actually been trying to come up with some final giant twist that nobody is going to guess...
But anyway, I'm still super excited about this. This is going to be a little bit long for a book, but oh, well.
Like, vote, comment, please, feedback! I love it all! :D
God Bless and Happy Reading!
