Amanda sat at her massive vanity table, curling each lock of hair to perfection. She wrapped one blonde lock around the curling iron, held it in place, and let it cascade into the rest of the curls as she heard her phone ring.
It's Hunter, she thought. Finally! It's about time he called me.
"Hello," she said, putting the phone on speaker and grabbing a can of hairspray from her drawer.
"Hey, Amanda, it's me, Hunter."
She pressed the button on the hairspray, letting the sticky liquid spread over her hair in a thick layer. "Hunter!" she exclaimed, though she was completely focused on her hair and had no real excitement from his call. He was a little late, honestly. She hadn't expected him to take so long.
"Hi, yeah." He laughed nervously, and Amanda rolled her eyes. He was so awkward, this one. When they'd first met, she had found his awkwardness endearing, and he had been fun to be with. Since she'd begun dating her current boyfriend, Matt, she'd realized that she was silly to have ever put up with him. He was too soft, too kind for her taste. He cared too much about things.
"So listen, did you want to get together for lunch today? Do you have plans?"
Amanda continued to fake happiness as she applied her foundation. "Yes, sure! I'd love to have lunch with you! I don't have any plans!" She added a small laugh for affect, knowing that her laugh was bewitching. Hunter had always loved her laugh, and she was going to have to use that to her advantage if she was going to get him back.
"Okay, awesome! Um, when is your lunch break? I'll swing by the coffee shop and pick you up."
"I get an hour off at noon. I can't wait to see you!" Hurry up with this, Hunter, I'm busy, she thought, setting off a puff of nude smoke with her powder.
"Yeah, I can't wait to see you either, Amanda," he said, making her roll her eyes again.
Yeah, I'll bet you can't, Hunter. He was far too easy to reel in. Oh well. Made her job simpler, if less interesting.
"Well, I have to go, Hunt, I'm running late for work," she said, brushing on more eye shadow and pulling a stick of eyeliner from her bag. "I'll see you soon!"
"Oh, okay, Amanda, see you!" She clicked the "End Call" button quickly, before he could claim undying love for her.
"Yuck," Amanda said, wanting to gag. Why did guys like Hunter even exist? They were too sweet; sickly sweet. It made her want to choke. No, Matt was much better. He didn't waste money giving tips to waitresses or passing out tens to homeless people on the street. To her knowledge, he had never once donated money to a charity, unless there was some publicity in it for him. He was a real gem. They had a lot of the same values, Amanda and Matt, and all of those values ended in a few dozen zeroes.
It had been Matt who had come up with this scheme, and Amanda had been willing to do whatever he wanted. It was the perfect plan, and she had no doubt of its success. Lying to Hunter about losing her job and being interested in him had only been the first step. She was sure she already had him on the ropes. Soon enough, she'd have him wrapped around her little toe again, walking all over him like she knew he would let her do.
Amanda dialed Matt, and he picked up on the first ring.
"What?" he said, and Amanda smiled. Matt was no Hunter.
"Hey, babe. Just got off the phone with Hunter. He's picking me up for lunch today."
Matt scoffed. "Finally. If I didn't know any better, Mandy, I'd think you were losing your touch."
