By the time they had been dating for two weeks, the tour bus was driving up to a destination in California, where Hunter had a sold out show on the beach. Hunter was, as always, really stoked to be playing outside, and to top things off, the weather forecast predicted rain.
"Since when do you love the rain so much?" Bethany had asked as she scrambled eggs and fried bacon that morning. "I don't remember you ever expressing love for it before." She would have remembered that, since rain was her single most favorite thing ever.
He'd gotten off his stool and wrapped his arms around her from behind, whispering in her ear, his breath tickling her cheek.
"Since you danced with me in it," he replied, kissing her cheek and tickling her waist. She yelped, laughing and shoving his hands aside.
"Hunter!" she protested, "I'm right by the stove!" He stopped, but he continued to laugh, and so did she.
He had been caught by the look in her eye, and her hand had come up to press against his cheek. Maybe now she's ready, he thought, placing his hands back on her hips and pulling her forward.
Just before he could make his move, the guys all filed through the door. He groaned and backed away, and she patted his arm soothingly and turned back to her eggs.
I just can't catch a break, he thought, going back to this stool and sipping his coffee.
That night, Bethany went over to see Hunter just before he walked on stage. His opening acts were done playing, and the backstage crew was on stage now, setting up a few extra pieces for Hunter's performance.
Beth stepped up behind him, hearing the tell-tale bounce of his disconnected electric guitar strings. She wrapped her arms under his, keeping her chin on his shoulder.
"Hey," she said, laughing.
"Hey," he replied, struggling to see her.
"Are you nervous?" she asked, turning her head to kiss his neck.
He made a noise in the back of his throat, making her chuckle. "How can I be nervous with you doing that?"
She laughed one more time, and let him go. "Break a leg," she said, waving at him as she retreated behind the curtain.
She had never smiled this much in all her life. She marveled at herself, looking back at her life. She had never trusted a man as much as she trusted Hunter. She had never felt so strongly about another person. Even though she was still wary, and she still wouldn't say that she loved him, she knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was the best thing that had ever happened to her. He was the best she could ever get, and if by some miracle he decided to stay with her, she would never be unhappy.
The Devil's voice in the back of her head had been mostly silenced. Hunter had done a splendid job of keeping it at bay with his constant attention and company and compliments. Their relationship was so easy, so natural, yet so very real. She hardly ever thought about all the bad things that could happen, all the different ways he could hurt her. She had begun to believe that he wouldn't...maybe even that he couldn't. She was starting to realize that he really did like her, that he really did care about her, and that he really was going to be true to his word. There was still that voice that reminded her that reality could change in a moment, and that he could change his mind at any second and she'd be out in the cold, but that voice was getting quieter and more distant every day.
She heard Hunter go out onto the stage as she roamed around, reminding the new rope worker, Dave, to listen for her signal. She was so glad Darryl was gone, even if it meant training a new guy to do his job. Dave was much kinder than Darryl, and, better yet, was engaged. No need to worry about him hitting on her.
As the weather report had predicted, it began raining about halfway through Hunter's second song, but he kept right on going, and seemed to be having even more fun than before. Beth watched from the sound booth, where they'd set up a monitor to record the show. For the first time, she almost wished that the world knew she and Hunter were together, because then she could go out and dance with him. To her, there would be nothing more perfect than dancing with her amazing boyfriend in the rain, even if it were in front of thousands of screaming fans.
