Judge Clarkson did a little more nodding, a little more scribbling, and a little more temple-rubbing before waving Hunter and Bethany back to their seats. They avoided each other's eyes as they took them in silence, and then Judge Clarkson began to speak.
"Due to the astonishing, and quite frankly frustrating, lack of communication and valid information present in this case, we shall be taking a recess of three days. In that time, I expect a valid DNA examination, and I want the person responsible for taking the pictures and writing the article in People magazine present as a witness. Court dismissed."
The second the judge left his chair, Amanda grabbed Bethany's arm and dragged her from the chamber. Bethany tried to keep up as she stormed past the press and ran from the room, but her arm was beginning to get a little sore, and she had no idea where Amanda was taking her.
Should I be afraid?
Hunter saw Amanda grab hold of Beth, and was immediately suspicious. No doubt Amanda was taking her to a secluded area to fill her head with poisonous lies and acidic evils against him. He tried to follow them, but the aisle was too quickly swallowed by the photographers and reporters, and his attention was being called in a million different directions as invasive questions were shoved into his ears like an overstuffed post office box.
In the hallway, Amanda let go of Bethany's arm, instead locking her elbow with hers in an attempt to look like they were very close friends. Matt had specifically told her she needed to get Beth on her side. She needed to play the part of her best friend, connect with her over Hunter, and fuel the fire of hate for him. Bethany could be a great ally, but she could also be the very worst enemy. It was her job to make the first a reality.
Bethany was led into the women's bathroom, and Amanda immediately began searching the stalls for any lingering users. Finding none, she shooed Beth away from the door, pressed it closed, and locked it in place.
Bethany gulped. This can't be good. She's locking the door. Why is she locking the door?
Amanda sagged up against the wood, letting out a sigh and pressing her hand to her forehead.
"I'm sorry," she said to Beth, who looked slightly terrified by this turn of events. "I just had to get out of there. This is just too much for me."
Beth saw the tears glistening in Amanda's eyes, and her heart went out to her. Awkwardly, she patted her shoulder, feeling out of place.
Suddenly, Amanda grabbed Beth up in a fierce embrace, crying heavily into her supportive shoulder. Beth hugged her back, shushing her and trying not to let her know just how weird this was.
I'm so confused! Am I supposed to be loyal to Hunter when he cheated on me with her? Am I supposed to side with Amanda, since he hurt her, too? How can I be on her team when she's the one who took him from me, knowing full well that he wasn't hers to take? But...how can I be on his side when he let her?
Amanda finally stopped crying, and leaned out of Beth's embrace to check her appearance in the mirror. She looked awful, but for once she didn't try to fix it. She was supposed to be overwhelmed, extraordinarily upset. She might as well look the part.
"I'm so sorry about what happened, Beth," she said, turning around and letting her eyes bore into hers. Beth froze. She's...apologizing?
"I knew that you were with Hunter, and still I let the whole thing get carried away, and now look where we are!" She threw up her hands in an exhausted manner, pressing her fingers to her eyes again. "I feel like such a terrible person, because I knew that my actions were going to hurt you, but I did them anyway. I have no excuse. I'm so sorry. I don't suppose there's any way you could forgive me?"
