Josh threw his jacket on, along with a bomber jacket, making sure to zip up the hoodie. He licked his bitten lips, grabbing the sunglasses, sliding them on perfectly and topping everything off with his hat.
Josh took a heavy breath, he looked up at the passenger seat of the open van, seeing a sad smiling Tyler. He leaned over, looking in the glove compartment and pulling out a twenty dollar bill. Tyler still looked at him with a bit of fear.
"We gotta eat, baby." Josh tried to convince him once more. Tyler just looked away from his eyes, yet he nodded in understanding. Side stop gas stations were perfect, getting lots of things with twenty bucks that could last them a week.
Josh leaned in, giving him a soft kiss. "I'll be right back."
"What if these guys aren't as stupid. What if they realize who you are before you can get out?" Tyler grabbed at his collar, not allowing him to get out of the van. Josh only smiled, grabbing at his wrist and kissing each knuckle.
"I got away last time, right?" he asked Tyler softly. I'll make sure to come back, this is nothing, it's a gas station. Once I get the food, we will keep driving in whichever direction you want, got it?" Josh told him and Tyler only nodded.
He then leaned in, giving Josh one more soft kiss before the eighteen-year-old began making his way out of the van. He made sure to keep his head down as he crossed the parking lot and made his way inside.
He looked around for a bit, seeing the man behind the counter had dropped his newspaper and was staring at him with a harsh glare. He paid it no mind, he was wearing three layers, had a bogan, hat, and sunglasses on.
No matter who you were, you were the clerks worst fear, dressed like that. Especially when Josh at all times kept his hands in his pockets while walking around only pulling them out to grab a snack.
Once Josh deemed snacks good, he grabbed a whole bunch of water bottles, stuffing them in the basket and making his way up. The clerk rung him up, a raised eyebrow bothering his way but Josh didn't mind, looking outside at the van and seeing Tyler's worried face.
He looked away, not wanting the clerk to the see the other boy. Instead, Josh trained his eyes behind the clerk, seeing any red flags. And of course, there they were, the two boys that ran away, separate pictures, different numbers under each.
Josh's photo looked more of a mug shot, only because he was in a juvenile prison for a couple months, but only for being reported repeatedly for graffiti, and punching an officer. But he's changed now, he wants to be better for Tyler.
Yet with his disappearance and Tyler's parents not liking the juvenile boy, the cops were now tracing them down in every corner of the town. That they were no longer in. Josh smiled at the clerk, snatching three bags before turning on his heel and making his way to the door.
"Hey!" the clerk shouted, making Josh pause. He didn't want to be too suspicious so he turned to look at the man. "You forgot your change," he called and Josh smiled. He looked down at the bags enveloping his hands and smiling at the clerk.
"Donate it to whatever charity you're helping." and with that, he left, crossing the parking lot and stuffing the bags in the back. He rid himself of the clothes and Tyler was instantly tackling his side making him chuckle a bit, starting up the ol' gal.
"You bought all of that with twenty bucks," Tyler gasped. He made his way to the bags, stuffing them in the right compartments as Josh gets the van moving. He looked at the rearview mirror, making sure they weren't followed but made sure to not seem so paranoid.
As long as he did the speed limit and didn't set off any cameras, they were free for the time being. Tyler began finishing up putting the food away when Josh spoke again, "how much do we have left over?"
"A little over seven grand," Tyler called back with a raised eyebrow. "Why?"
"I think we should do something different tonight." This caught Tyler's attention, making him swivel carefully back to the front seat and buckling in. "We should get a room, and you know, sleep in an actual bed."
"Air mattress starting to get to you?" Tyler struck back.
Josh smiled looking away from the road to look at Tyler with that admiration. "No, it's more like driving all day and sleeping on what feels like a floor at night, on shifts to keep lookout is starting to get to me. Besides, I miss cuddling with my baby."
Tyler blushed at that, he moved to the back and began packing a suitcase for their clothes to wear tomorrow for when they go back. "I miss cuddling with you too. I'll look for the closest one after we get to the next state, we're almost there anyway."
Josh nodded at that, watching the sunset slowly go down.
