Chapter 3

Picture: Lacey Darman

With my heart at my throat I double checked my phone to see if it was truly deceiving me. Of course my phone couldn’t do that, it was a device that responds to you. And at that moment I wished I didn’t have my crappy phone. I wished that we were back in the olden times where I wouldn’t have to worry about my father calling to check up on me. I licked my dry lips looking out into the unfamiliar looking woods.

“Aren’t you going to call your lover back,” asked an angry voice next to me. I jumped up a little startled from the person next to me, not realizing I was in Xavier’s car. Then I thought about his question not having a clue who he was talking about. Me having a lover? I had never had a lover in my life. Then it dawned to me that Xavier thought Victor was my lover.

I let out an incidental snort. “You are so far off, I’m not even going to laugh,” I replied with a shake of my head. I could hear him let out an animalistic growl, something I had been hearing from him the entire time I was with him.  I tried not to coil back in fear or have a little victory dance for speaking without stuttering. “Do not try to imply that I am stupid. I was merely wondering why you would let me touch you in an intimate way when you have someone already,” Xavier said in a satisfied tone. I understood Xavier was trying to insult me and was essentially calling me a whore, but knowing who he thought my ‘lover’ was just made everything he said humorous.

So I laughed. I laughed so much I could feel wet tears running down my cheeks. I laughed so hard and loud my stomach started to ache. I could feel Xavier’s glare on me, but still couldn’t keep calm. Finally when my throat ached and my stomach heaved from all my laughing, I stopped. Wiping my tears away I looked over at Xavier, I could tell he was mad by the way he gripped the steering wheel and the way his jaw clenched.

I was only but a mere teen and more specifically a girl, so I couldn’t help but admire his attractiveness. Not that I had looked at someone as handsome as him or have gotten as close to man like him, but his brooding attitude lacked for his charming looks. “My dad was calling me,” I said without realizing how much I had calmed Xavier down.

His stance completely changed. I could see the loosening grip he had on the steering wheel. His face was morphed from anger to a sense of calmness. I didn’t try asking why. The only way I saw it, as his mood changed, was that he clearly had anger issues or he was bipolar.

“Make a left,” I said signaling where a picture perfect neighborhood sat. As we rounded the corner I ordered anther sharp left. The homely neighborhood was replaced with dark unlit streets. It was up until then that I realized how dark it was even though it was only two. The clouds seemed to be a thick grey, wondering if they should pour rain down or not. I was hoping for the latter. As the car slowed down to the only house on the street I could hear Xavier let out a slight growl as he gazed upon my beat down house.

I started to get up to reach out for the locked door when a hand grabbed my arm. “Wait,” he said latching his fingers onto my wrist keeping me restrained from my father. The sparks still went ran through my veins at his touch. I couldn’t help but let a shiver run up my spin.
