Chapter 9

I paced the small cell, biting at my fingernails. It was a bad habit I had since I was a child but could never get rid of. The conversation with Lacey still repeated over my head. I couldn't seem to get the words she said out of my mind. The only thing I hoped I got out of all this was a one way ticket home without being humiliated and the laughing stalk of the town.

"La-Lacey?" I asked with uncertainty in my voice. I just wished and hoped it was Lacey on the other end and that I didn't call the wrong number. "No one has ever called our home line. But anyways, Sasha what's wrong?" I was shocked Lacey knew it was me right away and the noticeable amount concern in her voice had me reeling in surprise. "I-I'm fine. I mean, no I'm not fine," I bit at my finger nails nervously trying to get my thoughts in order.

"What's wrong?" Still the distress lingered in her voice leaving me slightly breathless. "I need money. But don't worry I'll pay you-" "Sure, where are you?" The way she didn't even bother asking me why or she didn't get angry at the fact that I was calling her up for money stunned me. Either she was totally unbelievably rich, which she was or she was kidding. I breathed out knowing I would just have to take the risk.

"I need five hundred dollars worth of bail money. I'm in jail." The line on the other side was silent. I waited, waited for either for her to turn the phone off or to help me. "Okay," the calmness in her voice had me taken aback. She was going to give me the money?

"You mean you'll bail me out?" I asked with a squeak. I didn't care my voice came out high pitched. I was going home finally! Not that home was a place I really liked, but it was better than jail. "I'll get the money and have someone get you in twenty." Before I could question her or protest anyone but her to get me, the line went dead.

Dropping down into my makeshift corner I couldn't help but worry that she wouldn't come or whoever she finds to come get me. I just hoped it wasn't Xavier. I didn't want him near me after what happened the day before. He couldn't just place a claim on me then go off to someone else. It was sick and I felt like the biggest idiot for almost falling for his little act.

Just the thought of him near me brought a boiling sense of anger to my blood. Not only that but I didn't want anyone else to know I was in jail. If a rumor spread around town that I went to jail for drugs, everyone would egg me on.

Then my dad would find out and I couldn't help but shiver in fear at the thought of what he would do to me. I glanced up at the clicking clock right outside the cell that seemed to be the only noise in the silent hall; it had been twenty minutes since I had called Lacey. Doubt started to creep in.

~Xavier

I stared up at the mural on the ceiling, the one my mother had created when I was only seven at the time. I could feel a slight ache in my heart as I thought of her. It had been her yearlong project for my eighth birthday. A different painting was set in Lacey's room with the theme of a Greek goddess.

As I surveyed the painting I couldn't help but see a resemblance between the wolf kneeling in front of the angel. My breath hitched as I slowly rose from the spot I was laying at. Looking up more closely, the fine details on the wolf had me reeling back almost stumbling off the bed. The wolf, it was me.

It was me in my wolf form. I could see it now. The dark brown fur almost black contrasted with the silver eyes that seemed to glow. The wolf seemed almost as tall as the angel as it bowed. It was defiantly me in wolf form. The angel wearing a silky toga with only a golden band wrapped at the waist seemed so familiar.
