+ the lake +
I had my arms out on each side of me, leaning back as a i swayed my legs in the shallow warm water, taking in the beaming sun as I watched my youngest brother, a training trident in his hand as he looked down at the water, moving around as he tried to find a fish to strike, which he was failing to do.
"There's nothing here, can we go home?" Zale moaned as he dropped his hands by his side, the bottom of the trident hitting the water as he turned towards me, a pout on his chubby face. He turned around quickly, trying to see if he could see a fish swim past him, letting out a deep sigh as I held my hand over my eyes, blocking the sun. He twisted around furiously, trying to see a fish swim past him. "You're moving too much Z" I said, to him, sitting on the bank, my feet mingling with the warm water.
"They won't come if you move, you need to stay still" I said looking at him through the sunlight, the blue glimmering. The lake was normally where you would learn to swim, or fish, it's where I learned how to swim 15 years ago, then 4 years after it's where I picked up my first trident, killing my first fish."If you stay nice and still they won't know you are there, but if you move around like you are they are going to stay away from you" I told him, standing up and walking over to him, the sand and seaweed at the bottom of the lake squelching beneath my feet.
"Look, just stay really still" I said, moving my hand on his shoulder, looking down at the water with him as I wrapped my other hand around his, gripping onto his trident as we looked down at the clear water. I heard a rustle in the trees, looking up at the tree line, two figures walking towards us. "Waverley" I heard Kai, my oldest brother, shout to us, causing me to place my finger on my lips, indicating for him to be quiet while I helped Zale get his first fish.
Firth, my boyfriend, was walking next to him a smile spread on his face, his blonde hair shimmering under the sunlight as a i looked back down at the water, Zale biting on his bottom lip as he focused greatly. "There's still not a fish" he whispered at me as a i squeezed his shoulder lightly, leaning down softly so I was at his ear height. "Keep waiting" I whispered to him as I saw the light catch the scales of a fish, reflecting them as I pointed at it, lifting his trident up as he let out an excited breath.
"Ready?" I asked, positioning his hand at the perfect spot as he nodded his head excitedly, holding his breath as he raised his arm back causing me to finally let go so he could strike himself. As soon as I let go he threw the trident into the water, hitting the fish perfectly before falling to the bottom of the lake.
"Yes" he shouted, bending down into the water to retrieve his first fish. He picked it up quickly, taking the trident out and handing it to me, practically running out of the water to show Kai and Firth."Look, look" he said holding up the fish to the boys, a wide smile on his face as he laughed loudly. "Well done Z" Firth said ruffling the top of his hair, looking at the small cod he had managed to nab. "Look at you" Kai said, easily scooping him up into his arms, bringing up to eye level as Zale wrapped his legs around his waist, getting a little bit too old to be held like that but he didn't care that much.
"Catching your first fish, next thing you know you'll be weaving a net" Kai told him, taking the fish from his hands and putting him back down on the grass, looking over the fish to wipe it free of mud. "Congratulations" Kai said in a funny voice, holding the fish up to Zale's face, moving the fish's mouth as if it was talking. Zale giggled at him, reaching out for the fish.
I climbed out of the water, walking over to the group of boys with the small trident in my hands, shaking off my feet to get the water off of them before making my over to my brothers and boyfriend. "How about we take this home, show mom and Haf" Kai said to Zale, clapping him on the back as he held the fish down by his side. "Yeah" he said excitedly, his eyes lighting up as he nodded his head once again, jumping up and down a bit.
