day two

I stood knee deep in the river as the sun rose in the distance, the red, orange and pink hues lighting up the place as I struck at a fish, my trident plates hitting it in the gills. I pulled my trident up, taking the fish off of the blades as I walked over to the bank, setting it down next to the other five I had already caught this morning alone.

I looked over at the other four, who were currently all asleep. Nolan was supposed to be taking watch to look out for any attackers, but instead she was slumped up against a tree, her head hung low as she slept. I didn't even want to think about sleeping surrounded by the others, my hand tightly on my trident all night as I stared at the water, the moonlight bouncing off of it gently. I watched them as they all had one hand on their weapons, their breathing mingle with each other as I held my trident down by my side.

It would be easy to kill at least one of them right now, impaling them in the chest before the other three woke up, probably leading to them tearing me apart themselves. The air was cool last night, a light breeze blowing over the jungle as the mist turned into a cold feeling. It wasn't cold enough to the point where we were freezing, but it wasn't exactly making us sweat in our sleep.

I let out a small sigh, looking back down at the water as a small fish swam through my legs, not even noticing that I was standing there as I pulled my trident back in my hand. It narrowly missed the blades, managing to swim away form be down the river as I pulled my trident back out of the water, moving around a little bit, my feet wading through the mud at the bottom.

There was the sound of a canon as I stopped moving, looking around as Valour snapped awake, whipping his sword up as he looked around quickly. "Morning" I said to him, the other three slowly waking up as week as Nolan sighed, stretching out her neck. "Thought it was your turn" Ashlor said to Nolan as she rolled her eyes, nodding her head as she yawned.

"It was" she said as I put my trident over my shoulder, Nolan turning towards me as I forced a smile at her. "When did I fall asleep?" she asked me as I shrugged my shoulders at her, Velvet standing up as she stretched out her arms, looking around us. "A few hours ago maybe" I replied to Nolan as she nodded her head at me, pulling her quiver off of her back as she set it down on the ground.

"I caught breakfast" I said to them, pointing at the fish as Velvet walked over to the river, dipping her hands in as she ran the water over her face. "That was another cannon, how many is that now?" Valour asked, pointing into the air as I got out of the river, thinking for a moment. "Thirteen" I told him as he nodded head head at me, Ashlor slowly waking up as he stayed lying on the floor, looking up at the sky.

"Eleven left" Nolan said with a small smile, pulling her hair out of its pony tail as she let her hair rest on her shoulders. "Can't be good difficult now" Valour said, swinging his sword back in his arm and lodging it in the tree of a trunk.

I leaned forward, twisting the large branch that I had pierced two fish through over the fire, cooking them slowly. Valour held one I had already cooked in his hands, picking away at the meat as he ate it slowly, Velvet pulling the bones out of hers carefully before taking a bite. "What do we do today?" I asked, sitting down again as I held a fish head in my hand, using a small knife to pull the cheek out of it, popping it into my mouth.

"Try cover the other half of the forest" Velvet said with a shrug, the fire cracking in the middle of us as it crisped you the skin of the fish sitting over it. "Maybe we should make our way back to the beach" Nolan said with a shrug, peeling the skin off of the part of fish she had with her nail, making a mess of it.

"If we head that way we should hit the beach by the end of the day" Velvet replied, pointing past me as i watched everyone, pulling as much of the flesh as i could out of the head of the fish. "Is it more likely that people will hide in the places we've already looked?" I asked quietly, Velvet looking up at me as she tore a piece of the fish off with her fingers, holding it in her hand. "How would they know where we have been though?" she asked as I shrugged my shoulders, knowing she was right, unless someone had been following us since the blood bath there was no way they would know where we were.

"Okay, so we head back to the beach through the part we haven't been yet" Valour said, nodding his head slowly as he threw the backbone of the fish he had destroyed onto the ground. "We camp out on the beach tonight and then double back tomorrow as well" he added, reaching forward and pointing at one of the fish that were cooking as he looked over at me.

I didn't realise why he was looking at me until he raised his eyebrows, the fact he was asking for permission hitting me as I nodded my head at him, causing him to take it as he pulled it off of the stick. "We're missing out a massive chunk of the jungle though" Ashlor added, nodding his head in the direction on the other side of the river, looking down at the fish he was holding in his hands, biting chunks out of it without even caring about the bones.

"If we head to the beach then we know that we can get food before the sun goes down, if we head deeper into the jungle we don't know if there will be anything to eat" Velvet added, chewing slowly as Nolan nodded her head, looking over at me as I pulled the other cheek out of the head, popping it into my mouth as I looked up at her. "Waverley?" she asked me as I raised my eyebrows, none of them having asked me to be part of the plan before.

"I vote beach" I said quietly, Nolan nodding her head at me as she flicked some of the scales off of her fingers, a bit squeamish of it. "We are going to the beach then" Ashlor said as I reached forward, taking the last fish from the fire as I pulled it off of the fire. I used the knife that was in my hand to get under its gills, pulling it down towards the floor as it pulled off the skin in one large sheet.

I held the stick out to Nolan as she looked at me, smiling before taking the fish from me, causing me to put the skin in my mouth, not minding the taste of it as she and Velvet shared the last fish of the morning.
