+ home sick +
I stood in my room on the train, a large bed up against a wall with a door which led to a small bathroom just for me, something which I had never had the privilege to have before. I didn't want to move as I looked around quickly, the sights of green fields all I could see from the window as I turned around, an arm chair sitting up against another wall with a small table next to it.
I let out a deep breath as I ran my hands through my hair quickly, dropping my hand as I looked down at my wrist, the bracelet sitting there as I ran my finger over the careful knots, smiling down at it softly. I walked over to the bed as I fell onto it, practically falling through the mattress as I stared at the roof, not knowing what else to do at the point.
I closed my eyes for a moment, hoping that when I opened them again I would be at home in my very own bed, Kai barging in at any moment to ask if I wanted to go fished later. But that wasn't going to happen anymore, and at some point in the last few weeks Kai and I had gone fishing together for the last time, which made me unbelievably sad.
The fact that this was it made me want to break down crying once again, which I didn't think was possible after lol the crying I had been though earlier on in the day. I heard the door slide open as ai turned around to see Mags standing there, a small smile on her face as she stood at the door way. "Can I come in?" she asked me as I nodded my head at her, walking over to the bed as I sat on the end, tucking my hair behind my ear as Mags stood, clasping her hands in front of her.
"It's going to be hard, I won't lie to you" Mags said to me as I looked over at her, nodding my head at her as I sat on top of my hands, Mags letting out a deep breath as she walked over, sitting down on the bed next to me. "I remember when the games were first announced it was anarchy in the districts" she said to me, both of us milling in silence as neither of us spoke for a moment, Mags turning to look over at me.
"Where about in the district are you from?" she asked me as I let out a small breath, wiggling about a bit on the bed as I sank into it. "South" I said to her, looking over at her as she nodded her head at me. "Golden Lake" I clarified, all of the towns in the District normally names after the biggest lake that was in them. "That's where I live now" she told me, causing me to nod my head at her as I rubbed my lips together.
"I walk past Victors Village on my way to school" I told her as she nodded her head at me, clasping her hands in her lap as she looked ahead of her. "Does your father work on the boats?" she asked me as I nodded my head at her, not wanting to speak as she raised her eyebrows at me, coercing an answer from me as I looked ahead of me as well. "Serenity" I told her, Serenity having a reputation for being one of the biggest boats in the District, most of the richer fish mongers working in it. Being a Serene family was quite a big thing in the district as it was a generation boat, meaning the boat had been home to the same families since it was built, Kai lined up to start working on it once he turned 18.
"My father used to work on Liberty" she told me as she played with a ring she had on her finger. "How old were you?" I asked her, not having to clarify my question as she looked over at me, a small sad smile on her face. "16, same as you" she told me as I nodded my head, biting the inside of my cheek as we both sat in silence for a moment. "I remember when the games were fresh, it was anarchy in the districts" she told me as she pushed her hair behind her ears quickly, swallowing the lump in my throat as I let out a small breath.
"24 kids a year used to be such a large sacrifice, but now no one bats an eye" she said quietly as I shook my head slightly, barely enough for her to notice. "I want to go home" I said to her quietly, tears pricking the back of my eyes as she scooted closer to me, wrapping her arm around my shoulder as I laid my head on her shoulder. A tear fell from my eye as she rubbed my shoulder gently, soothing my as I closed my eyes, squeezing them closed.
"I know you do" she said to me, her voice calming as she let me sob for a while, neither of us saying anything as I slowly grieved my life, knowing that the chances of me coming out of that arena wasn't very high.
