day five
I sat up against a tree, watching Velvet sleep as her chest rose and fell, her hand held securely on a knife in her belt as I breathed along to the same beat as her. The sun had gone down, the moonlight casting over us to offer us some light in the middle of the night. It was probably early morning already, my internal clock completely thrown off by the artificial time that they were trying to create in here.
The days were extremely long, the sun staying up in the sky for a lot longer than it normally would in the outside world. As soon as the sun went down they would project the Panem logo in the air, showing us the tributes who had died in that day, and it had been completely empty since day 3, not a single person having died. I held my trident in my hand, not moving as I tucked some of my hair behind my ear, my forehead sweating, blinking a few times as I looked over at Nolan.
Her breathing was heavy, and she was the first one of all of them to fall asleep tonight, my eyes staring at her ever since she had finished off that fish. I had no idea how long it would take for the fish to kick in, but I was secretly hoping that she just wouldn't wake up, making her death as painless as possible for her, but it probably wouldn't be.
I looked over at Valour and Ashlor, who were lying on the floor, their hands on their weapon handles as they breathed, snoring lightly as I let out a small breath. I had waited for long enough to know that they were probably asleep, or at least I hoped that they were asleep. I was supposed to wake up Velvet soon so that she could take watch, giving me some sleep.
I looked away from them, holding my breath as I stood up as slowly as I possibly could, trying to not make a single nose as I watched them, not wanting to wake anyone up. I held my trident straight down by my side, making sure to not make any sudden movements. We were sleeping right on the line of t he jungle and the beach, my safest idea being to run along the beach for a little bit before making my way into the jungle, far away from them so there wasn't a risk of them hearing me.
I stared over them for a moment, lifting my foot as I moved to the right gently, trying not to step on anything that would make too much noise. Velvet's breathing suddenly hitched, making me stop moving as I stood still, looking down at her to make sure she wasn't going o wake up. Her breathing fell back into its normal rhythm, making me hope that she was still asleep.
I knew that leaving them was the best thing to do, and while breaking apart from the group would make me their number one target, I couldn't stay around them for any longer while more people were dying. I moved again as lightly as I could walking away from them as I avoided leaves and vines, scared that one of them would snap under my foot ans wake them up.
I ducked under a large tree branch, my feet hitting the sand as I backed out onto the beach slowly, leaving the four of them behind as I let go of the breath I was holding as lightly as possible. I turned in the sand, running as fast as I could, moving close to the waves but not too close for the water to make a sound, but close enough for the water to wash away my footsteps.
I ran along the beach, the moonlight hitting the water as I moved as quickly as my legs could carry me, hoping that no one had woken up from me leaving. I looked back, thinking that I was an okay distance away from them as I made my way into the jungle at an angle, hoping to get as far away from the pack as possible. I moved the vines away from me with my arm, trying to run on my toes as I ducked under tree branches, running as light footed as possible to not leave any footprints for them to track me.
I took in a deep breath as I kept running, wanting to put as much distance between myself ans the other four as possible. My breathing was heavy and my legs ached from exhaustion as I used my trident to move vines away from me, giving me a path to keep running, not stopping for a moment. The fact that I hadn't had any water to drink if the past few days was finally catching up with me, my mouth dry as I took in gulps of the humid night air around me, the moonlight breaking through the canopy of leaves as I kept running as fast as I could.
The lack of water I had been drinking in the past few days was catching up to me as I stumbled around as fast as I could, needing to get as far away from the pack as possible. I looked left and right, on a odd path that had a big bill next to me, the fall down to the ground quite steep as i let out a breath. I tried to walk down it sat steadily as I could, but my foot slipped as I fell onto my back, sliding down it. I had to bite my tongue to avoid screaming as I scared across tree roots and stones, which scratched my back as I tumbled down the hill.
I tried to make sure that I was holding my trident right so that it wouldn't end up in my chest when I hit the bottom, rolling down the hill as I hit my head against a large rock, making me yelp quietly. I landed on the ground in a heap of limbs as I threw my hand up to my head, holding onto my scalp, pulling it away to see that my hand was covered in dark blood. I closed my eyes tightly, taking in a few deep breaths as it ached, the night sky above me as I let out a deep breath, the pain covering my head.
I sat up, a scrambling to my feet as I kept one hand on my head where it was bleeding, the blood spilling down my cheek as I picked up my trident. I stumbled a little bit, my legs sore from cuts and scratches from the fall as I tried to keep walking. The arena was spinning around me, the head injury doing some damage as I fell into a tree, pushing my shoulder into it as my breathing quickened.
I tried to stay upright as I felt my throat burning, causing me to buckle over as I threw up, vomiting onto the correct ground as retched up all the fish that I had eaten tonight. I stood there for a moment, my hands on my knees as I took a few deep breath in, closing my eyes as I stood up slowly, leaning against the tree as I closed my eyes once again.
I didn't know what to do, it was clear that whatever the blow to the head was doing to me I wasn't going to get far in the dark. Combine that with my dehydration I was not going to get far before I collapsed completely. I looked around, barely being at the bottom of the hill, surrounded by tall trees with branches way out of my reach. If the pack walked along the top of that hill and looked down they would easily be able to see me.
I let out a breath, wiping the sides of my mouth with the back of my hand, which was covered in blood. I reached up to my head again, feeling where the cut was as I bit down on my tongue to avoid screaming out in pain, also drawing blood as my teeth pierced the skin. My hair was covered in blood as I sank down to the floor onto my knees, surrounded by my own blood and throw up.
Half of my face was covered in blood that was falling out of the cut, the metallic taste lingering in my mouth as I tried desperately to think about what to do. "I'm okay, okay" I said to myself quietly, mumbling it over and over again as my breathing was ragged and shallow. I racked my head for anything that I could do right now, desperately needing something to cover my cut to stop the bleeding, or I would be sitting here until I bled out.
And by the amount of blood that was pouring out of my head, it was looking like that was where I would end up.
