day six
My eyes fluttered open slowly, everything remaining black for a moment before light started dancing around my eyes. I was lying on the floor, staring up at the canopy of trees which was leaking in sunlight through the small gaps. For a moment I forgot where I was, squinting my eyes as I took in a deep breath of the humid air in which I lay in. It didn't last long before the sharp pain in my head brought me zooming straight back into reality.
I didn't move for a moment, wondering that if I sat up straight I would just fall and faint once again. My trident still may by my side, the pool of blood that was surrounding me having dried up at this point, the smell of my puke making me want to vomit once again. I had no idea how long I had been knocked out for, but one thing I did know was that that was the most interrupted sleep I had had since I got into the arena, but I still managed to wake up feeling like utter crap.
I kept my eyes closed as I sat up slowly, exhaling as my back ached from having been laying on the hard ground for so long. I opened up my eyes slowly, my vision still a bit blurry and the edges of the tree trunks fuzzy as I looked around. It was still extremely humid, and the beaming sun couldn't be doing any better. I lifted my hand up slowly to the top of my bandage, which had completely soaked through, my fingers having a skittle blood on them as I looked over both my arms and legs.
They were still pretty barely scratched and bruised, but there was nothing too deep that they could get infected or anything, so I just chose to ignore them. My eyes were struggling to stay open, my hand gripping onto my trident as I just up right for a moment. I tried to remember when I had passed out, the last thing I remember being wrapping the bandage around my head, the metal container that it had come in already having disappeared from my side.
I had no idea where I was in the arena, as I had managed to crawl myself away from the hill I had fallen down last night, or what I thought was last night. It was possible I had only been asleep for a few hours, but the fact that my blood that was on the bandage was already dried and crusted, I was guessing I had been asleep for a lot longer.
I was still croaking of thirst, and i'd I didn't find any water today I would probably be gone by tomorrow afternoon, plus add in the amount of blood that I had lost which might speed up the process a little bit. "Okay, I need to go" I said to myself silently, pulling my knees up to the chest as I put my trident in front of me, stabbing the blades in the ground so I would have someone to pull myself up on.
I grinned my hands around it as tightly as I could, slowly moving onto my knees before standing up extremely slowly, stopping for a moment if my vision started disappearing before moving again carefully. I couldn't stand up straight, my back hurting way too much for me to push my shoulders back, so I let out a breath as I stood there hunched over. I moved my trident, deciding to use it as a walking stick as I shuffled along side it as slowly as I possibly could.
"This is fine" I said to myself, nodding my head which just hurt more than it did any good. I took a few more steps, having to stop to take a few deep breaths to ease through the pain, but after a while I was only having to stop after every ten steps. It took me a long time to even get away from the spot in which I had passed out, but I was slowly getting much more stable on my feet, which would help.
I had been shuffling along for what seemed like hours now, stopping every once in a while, feeling the moss on the trees to try and figure out if there was a water source near by, but the humidity in the arena made all the moss wet, so it wasn't really hello my me at all. I paused in my spot, now on a relatively clear path inbetween two large sections of tree, birds singing and insects humming all around me as I looked both ways I was walking.
I could hear the faint fluttering of bird wings, having to turn my head in all directions to see where it was coming from, but I was sure it wasn't just a figment of my imagination. I swallowed the dry lump in my throat, turning around as I looked into the trees, the noise coming from that direction as I took a small step forward. I knew the sound well, the rustling of feathers that indicated that a bird was dancing about in a pool of water.
We always had a small basin under the two that was on the outside of my house in which we used to wash our tridents and fish that we had gutted. As a child I used to sit and watch the birds stand in the water, taking small sips before using theirs wings to flap up as much water as possible onto their bodies, and it was the same type of noise that I was hearing now.
I walked through the trees, stopping to listen to the bird before changing direction and walking towards the noise. I halted in my spot, dropping my foot onto the mud as I stared as. large rock that was siting in between a few trees, the sound of the bird loud to tell me that I was close to it now. I lifted my trident up on my hand, holding it defensively as I walked around the rock as silently as I could, scared that someone or something could be hiding on the other side, ready to attack me.
I cleaned my neck around the rock to see nothing there, but a small bird standing next to a puddle of water, poking its beak in as it took sips of it, it's wings wet from washing itself. "Thank god" I said as I walked around the rock quickly, the bird clocking me as I spread its wings, lifting itself off of the ground quickly and leaving me by myself once again.
I kneeled down next to the puddle, far enough away so that I wouldn't cause the walls of it to cascade in but close enough to sit next to it. I stared at the water for a moment, and it looked relatively clear and drinkable. As far as I was aware there was no purifying items that could have made water drinkable in the cornucopia, so i'm guessing that that meant that all the water in here was perfectly fine to drink.
I let out a breath as I clipped my hands, about to dunk them in the puddle before I looked down at them, covered in blood and dirt from my accident. It definitely wasn't a good idea to be washing off all of the in the water that I was about to drink, which would probably make it not as safe as I was hoping for it to be. I quickly unzipped the pouch on my hip, pulling out the small flask I had and dunking the spout of it it under the water, keeping my hands away from it as bubbles rose to the surface, filling it up.
I lifted it up to my mouth as soon as it had filled up a little bit, the warm temperature of it sweeping through my mouth and moistening my dry tastebuds as I held it there, not wanting to swallow it but to just stay there and reverse all of my dehydration from the last few days.
