Take your time or I'll take your Heart

Chapter 26

I raced to the hospital and parked the car when we got there. I helped Ren out and Morgana jumped onto my shoulder. I helped him inside and a nurse alerted another nurse to get a doctor.

"What happened to him?" the nurse asked.

I came up with a reasonable excuse and they took it. A doctor came by with a stretcher and they put him on his stomach. They took him into the back and I waited in the waiting room with Morgana.

"I hope he's going to be ok," I said.

"He'll pull through."

"How do you know?"

"He has you to pull him through. He has something to fight for."

I smiled and sat down and Morgana rested on my lap. About an hour had passed and I was able to see Ren. Before I did, I walked down towards the little gift shop they had. I bought him a small 'Get Better Soon' balloon and a little teddy bear with a heart attached to it. I walked down towards his room and saw he was laying on his side. His back was facing me, which was open. I walked over to him and set the balloon and bear on the table next to his bed. Morgana jumped from my shoulder and walked along the bottom of the bed. I sat down in front of him and he looked up at me. His eyes were a bit red and puffy.

"Ren, is everything alright?"

"We shouldn't have done that," he whispered.

"Why?"

"I put you in danger," he said as tears threatened to stream down his face. "I put you in danger because you were inexperienced with the metaverse. I wasn't there to help you." Ren sat up and wiped the tears from his eyes. "I made a promise to you. A promise I will keep forever. I almost failed to keep that promise."

I reached over and grabbed his hand. He pulled away once our hands touched one another. He didn't look at me.

"Ren, look at me."

"No," he said.

I sighed and reached over and forced him to look at me. Tears were streaming down his face now. I sighed and pressed my lips lightly against his. He closed his eyes and melted in. He cupped my cheeks as we stayed there for a few seconds. I pulled away and pressed my forehead against his.

"Ren, you did you absolute best to keep me out of harm's way. That is the most notable thing you have ever done for me. I can't thank you enough."

He smiled and kissed my forehead, "I love you, Y/N."

"I love you too, Ren. Let me see your back."

He turned around and I saw the two long whip marks along with his other scars. I traced them lightly, making sure I wasn't hurting him. I sighed and he turned around and looked at me.

"I'd do it all over again if it meant I would keep you safe," he said to me.

I smiled at him and he placed his right hand on my right cheek. I melted into his touch and held onto his wrist.

"Thank you for everything, Ren."

He smiled, "You're welcome."

"That might have been our final mission together, Joker," Morgana said.

"Now, I want to focus on what's in front of me."

"What's that?" I asked.

He turned his attention towards me, "You. You and our future we have together."

I gave him a quick peck on the lips. "You know how to swoon a girl over."

He chuckled, "Thanks."

Around the evening time, my mother came in to see how Ren was doing.

"How are you doing, Ren?"

"I'm alright."

"What happened?"

I had to close the door to explain to my mom. I told her about what happened to me with Ren and what happened to dad. She was a bit confused, but she didn't see him anything less of what Ren was. She still saw him as the loving boyfriend he was when we first got together.

"Thank you for taking care of her," my mother said.

"I'd do it all again if it meant protecting her," Ren said.

"I'll let you two be. I just wanted to make sure he was ok. You just said that he was hurt. Nothing specific or anything."

"What happened with dad?"

"He needs to be put on trial. You and I have to be a witness. He didn't really do much to your sister, but both of us were victims."

"When's the court case?"

"In a few weeks. Ren, you're allowed to come if you'd like."

"I'll be there to support Y/N."

"Alright. I'll send more details in regards to it."

"Thanks, mom," I said.

"Take care, sweetie. You take care, Ren."

"I will," Ren said.

My mother walked out of the room and it was just me, Ren, and Morgana. Around ten I had to leave, even though I had asked if I could stay with him. The doctors didn't want me to stay. I grabbed Morgana and said goodbye to Ren. I walked out and towards the apartment. Once we made it back to the apartment, Scarlet was there to greet me. She looked for Ren when I walked in.

"He'll be back before we know it," I said.

She whimpered a bit and looked down at Morgana. Morgana just meowed and it looked like Scarlet understood. I walked back towards my room and got changed. I crawled into bed and for the first time, it felt empty. After getting together with Ren, he's always been there. This was the first time where I hadn't felt his presence. I didn't like this feeling.

"Get better soon, Ren. I miss you," I said with tears in my eyes.
