Clary burst through the hospital doors, a steady stream of tears flowing as she flew towards the front desk. She braced her hands against the cool marble as she desperately looked at the lady sitting behind the counter.
"W-where's my fiancé- Is he okay?? Where is he? Please tell me, oh my God- please-"
She was interrupted by the woman shushing her, sending her a sympathetic look. "Shhh, Miss, please calm down. All I need is his first and last name, and I can give you his room number, or else I might need to ask you to wait for a while."
She tried to sound as soothing as possible, but the idea of waiting nearly made Clary start hyperventilating.
"J-Jace Herondale." She croaked, wrapping herself tighter in the oversized cardigan she threw on before she bolted out the door.
The lady typed something into the computer in front of her and scanned it for a moment.
"Jace Herondale. Car crash?" She gave another sympathetic look and Clary nodded meekly. "Room 625."Clary didn't need to hear any other information, she took off in a sprint, thundering down the halls and up the stairs until she was just a floor below where she was supposed to be.
Her breath rattled in her throat, lungs burning as she sobbed uncontrollably.
People that passed her in the halls and stairs moved to get out of her way, shooting her sad looks as she flew by.She made it to the floor where she was supposed to be, sprinting and looking at the numbers of the rooms desperately. '620, 621, 622,623,624...' Clary skidded to a screeching halt as the numbers 625 loomed over her.
She grabbed the door handle and pushed with all her body weight, throwing the door open forcefully. She stumbled into the room, scanning it before sobbing again. It was empty.
The dark room didn't even have a light on inside, the bed was perfectly made, none of the machines were whirring and it all looked... untouched.Clary choked on another defeated sob, backtracking out of the door to make sure she had the room right. 625.
She hadn't made a mistake.
"Where is he!!!!" She cried, causing the few people in the hall to look her way.
A doctor that had been making his way down the hall with a clipboard looked up with a surprised expression, glancing towards her, then at the room. "I'm sorry, may I help you?" He inquired, gently guiding her to the side.Clary blinked back impatient tears, holding the doctors gaze as she said clearly, "My fiancé, where is he? He was in a car crash, t-they called saying he was injured a-and nobody's telling me where he is!!" Her shoulders shook violently until she was sobbing again, causing the doctor to shift uncomfortably on his feet as he tried comfort her with a hand on her back. He scanned his clipboard before looking at the door number, he visibly gulped before turning to face her again. "Jonathon Herondale?" He asked and she nodded quickly.
"Your fiancé..." A dreaded look crossed the doctors face and he gently turned her until she was fully facing him. "Miss, this news may come as a shock to you... but I need you to remain calm." He gazed into her eyes, making sure she agreed before continuing.
"Your fiancé suffered injuries to his head during the car crash. This... trauma, has left his reactions to certain things... sensitive. I'm afraid we cannot allow you to see him. He's being moved to a different hospital where they will look after him until he's well enough to be on his own way. We've contacted some distant relatives of his and he'll be put into their care. I'm afraid... you may never be able to have another interaction with him for the time being, it may take quite some time until he is physically able to cope seeing you or anything he has extreme emotional attachments to. After time... he may not be able to remember you, at least... not fully. Do... do you understand what I'm saying, Miss?"
Clarys body shook viciously as she stared at the doctor, tears violently flowing down her face. Jace... wouldn't remember her? She wouldn't be able to... see him? Distant family? Different hospital?
"What hospital? What family?" She croaked, voice breaking completely. The doctor gave her a defeated look, his features taking a sad expression. "I'm... I'm afraid we're not allowed to inform you any information about the patient if you were to... go against what we're saying and try visit him. His brain wouldn't be able to process all of the emotional trauma at once and... potentially, it could... give up. I'm so sorry for your... your loss, Miss."
It was though Clary wasn't breathing, thinking or moving.
It was as if time had completely stopped and was watching the whole encounter.
It was as if every eye in that hall was on her, judging her reaction.
It was if her world was ending. Because a world without Jace in it...
Jace was her world.
And now he was gone.
It took all but a few moments before her knee's gave out and she was on the floor, face buried in her hands as she sobbed.
