Recap...

I tuned him out, and turned to Jessica, who was sitting on my left and Aisling beside her.

I asked the one question that had been swarming through my mind for the past few hours.

‘Who is he?’

Chapter Five: Nothing makes sense

Jessica looked at me through narrow eyes before replying to my question. She seemed hesitant, somehow. Or maybe this place was getting to me. Either choice was possible.

‘He’s Aaron...Aaron Hennings’, she whispered into my ear, while keeping a watchful eye on Mr. Smith, who was still badgering us about the reports. ‘He came here the same time as well did-in the ninth grade. No one knows where he came from; he’s just a mystery. And that’s why almost every girl here wants his attention, but he just never gives any notion of interest to them. Well, that and his extremely good looks.’

I smiled lightly at the tone in which she said the last bit, as if it was so obvious.

‘So he just keeps to himself, basically?’

Jessica shrugged. ‘More or less....well, it’s him and his friend, Aiden Walshe. Aiden is a lot more sociable though. He’ll talk to you and stuff, but Aaron just seems depressed all the time. Turns the girls on even more’, she sniggered.

‘You don’t like him?’ I asked.

‘Ah, he’s alright. But what’s the point when he doesn’t pay attention to any girl-except...’

The last word caught my attention. ‘Except...?’

‘You’, she said bluntly. ‘Look to your right on the other side of the hall. ‘He’s starting right at you’.

What? I turned to where Jessica had shown me with her eyes, ever so discretely, to see Aaron staring at me-not so discretely, I may add. When our eyes locked, his bore straight into mine, as if he didn’t care that I had just caught him staring at me.

I couldn’t bring myself to look away. I was mesmerised with those dark, black eyes that sent chills through my body. I wanted to look away-to find the biggest rock I could and hide under it-but...I just couldn’t. I was not the one who was going to look away first.

I realised that I was bringing a lot of attention towards myself. Numerous pairs of eyes were glancing in both mine and Aaron’s direction, and the whispering was getting more and more prominent. But I was not backing down. I was Heather Newberry, and I did not back down; ever.

‘Excuse me! Mr Hennings and Newby! Would you mind not staring into each other’s eyes and even pretend to pay an iota of attention to what I am saying.’ Mr. Smith’s deep voice boomed through the hall.

Aaron looked away quickly. Ha!

Feeling victorious, I glanced back to Mr, Smith, who was glaring at me with an annoyed expression. Well, annoyed was maybe an understatement... I looked down, seeming all innocent faced.

He seemed to look at me through narrowed eyes before carrying on. ‘Now, classes shall be beginning tomorrow as you all know. You will receive your books and lockers during the day. Eleventh graders should be getting theirs at one forty-five if everyone co-operates...’
