Recap...
After a moment of silence he spoke.
‘Look, I’d love to tell you but I can’t okay? Case closed.’ And he ran down the corridor once more.
I didn’t even bother trying to go after him. Instead, I collapsed onto a bench, hugged my knees and cried.
I hated him then. Hate was my relative.
Chapter 15
No sooner had I felt myself dozing off, did my phone begin to vibrate in my skirt pocket. Yawning lightly, I pulled it out to see it was Jessica. Oh shit, I had forgotten about them! And the crappy friend award goes to... dun dun dun – me.
‘Hey Jess’, I murmured into the phone.
Two sufficiently angry female voices answered me. ‘Heather! Where the fudge are you!?’
‘We have searched every nail and cupcake to find you!’ Jessica continued, almost hysterical.
‘Aisling... How much sugar did she have?’ I asked cautiously. Jessica was definitely not sober at this time.
‘You could have been abducted by monkeys!’ Jessica shouted into the speaker unexpectedly, making me jump back and hit my head off the back wall. I cursed silently.
‘Well...’ Aisling began, ‘We started getting worried when you didn’t show up for geography and Mr. Smith interrogated us as if we were the ones who were missing. So yeah, in between geography and now, which is a two hour period, she may have had about five bars...?’ She trailed off questionably.
‘Five!?’ I exclaimed. ‘You serious?’ When Jessica had a bar, she had the full on twenty four square milk chocolate bar which ninety per cent of the time, was Cadbury’s.
Just then, Jessica shouted into the speaker again. ‘Can you ask the monkeys to make me a banana pie!? BUT IT HAS TO HAVE CHOCOLATE CHIPS IN IT!’
I held the phone far away from my ear at her words. Talk about reaching high vocal cords.
‘Geez woman!’ I heard Aisling scold her sister. ‘Listen Heather’, she sighed. ‘I’m going to get her some warm milk since it’s the only thing that clams her down. But seeming as you have not been abducted by monkeys-’
‘Who owe me pie!’ Jessica interjected, but Aisling ignored her and continued on.
‘-would you mind coming over to our room now? We need to know what’s going on.’
I bit my lip before answering. ‘Um... Sure!’ I chirped, ending the call. I knew my voice sounded fake and overly preppy. I was nervous about telling them. I had almost been killed. That wasn’t exactly something they would smile upon.
Plus, they knew about my anxiety, so to say, when it came to Aaron, so only God knew what their reactions would be.
That though brought on another wave of guilt. Some holy, God believing person I was. I hadn’t even attempted to pray to Him or anything through the past few days. All I did was mope around and hope for the best. But I did not ask anyone for that hope, just throwing the word out there, in the wind, where it would be inevitably lost.
Hope was really the only emotion I could actually handle. Hatred would be the death of me, and sorrow and fear only fuelled it. Happiness was only a facade, but I thought that the twins had unlocked some part of me that was actually lighter than the rest.
