The Library

It was Tuesday afternoon and my fourth day in the apartment. I finally managed to arrange all my clothes in the closet, buy groceries, and start decorating. Jen's Gem was coming along and it was beginning to feel like my own sanctuary.

I still had one more day before classes and needed to check out and rent my textbooks. It was the beginning of the Winter quarter of my third year at UCLA and by now I had a set system for avoiding buying books that I would never open again after taking a class. I would review the syllabi and check out any books from the library and rent the other options.

After doing my research I saw that I only had to rent one book as all the others were available at the library.

I grabbed my book bag, wallet, and a granola bar before heading outside. I loved walking to campus. It was fifteen minutes from my place and there were hills and dips on every other street, it was cardio all on its own. Plus I enjoyed seeing all the trees, the valley of grass, and all the squirrels scurrying about on my way to class.

I put in my earphones and I begin my trip as The Story of Light Epilogue plays. This album was one of my favorites because of the upbeat tracks and how well each song flowed together with the next.

I had been a KPop fan for three years at this point, ever since I took a global pop class my first quarter at UCLA. There was one lesson on KPop and the first song I ever heard was EXO's "Mama." I cannot pinpoint one specific aspect which captured my attention but it sounded refreshing to my ears and I was hooked after the first listen. Not to mention, I became a super fangirl because of all the gorgeous idols. Count me in for supporting talented, hardworking, and dedicated artists who are also so breathtakingly handsome.

This fascination was something Adam did not approve of. We would argue about what music to play in the car and he never understood my interest in music in a language I was not fluent in. In reality, his disapproval stemmed from the fact that I was attracted to many of the groups' members. Even if they were celebrity crushes, he would get jealous. I would reassure him and say that the chances of meeting most of them in person were super slim..but if I ever saw Jaebum or Baekhyun and they even blinked in my direction then he could consider himself single.

A couple minutes later, I enter Powell library and head down the stairs towards the book stacks. As an English major, I had become very familiar with this area as it contained numerous novels for my classes and it was my preferred study spot. This quarter I was taking four classes; two upper divisions for my major, a Children's Literature course for my minor, and a Statistics class for the university requirement. I was only worried about the latter because Math was never my strongest subject and it was often difficult for me to grasp concepts.

I turn into the aisle where I would find my Stats book and begin looking for the reference code. After a quick scan, I see the textbook title on the top shelf. I look around for a stool but cannot find one. I then get on my tip toes and reach my arm as far above my head as I can.

One minute of wiggling around does not result in any luck and I do a small jump hoping I can grab it now. Three jumps later and I realize it's not working.

I suddenly hear a voice from behind me ask "hey do you need some help?"

Before even replying, I see an arm reach in front of me and bring the textbook down and hand it to me.

"Thank you." I say and look at the cover to confirm it was the one I needed. I finally look up and see a gorgeous man in his early twenties with porcelain, glowing skin, plump lips, an adorable nose, and tousled dark brown hair.

My eyes widen slightly and I blurt out "Wow you are so handsome!"

I immediately cover my mouth with my free hand out of embarrassment.

He smiles and replies "Thank you. I saw you struggling to get the book- it was adorable actually- and thought I should help. Oh and I'm Park Jimin." He extends his hand.

I shake his hand. "Nice to meet you and thanks again for the book. Um I'm Jenna but you can call me Jen. Sorry I was so honest right now."

"Don't worry, I accept the compliment."

He looks down at the book I am holding. "Are you taking Stats this quarter?"

"Yeah I've been putting it off for a while. I'm a Humanities major so Math isn't my best friend. I'm just going for it now though."

"I'm actually the opposite. I'm Computer Science."

"Wow that's impressive! All that just goes above my head" I chuckle. "Props to you, I know CS is pretty competitive here."

"I learned that quickly. I'm actually studying abroad here this year and that's one of the first things I noticed."

"Oh cool where are you coming from?"

"South Korea, Busan to be exact."

"Ahh that's exciting! Annyeonghaseyo Jimin oppa" I greet him and give a small bow.

He beams at me. "Neoneun hangukeo malhani?"

"Ne, jeoneun joguem algoissda. Umm.. I took two classes here just for fun so I can have a very basic conversation. You just have to speak slowly and give me a minute to form my sentences."

"Very cool, I'll be sure to do that."

"I am pretty rusty though and my pronunciation isn't the best."

"You probably just need more practice. You have a really cute accent though."

"Ah gamsahabnida, I try." I manage a shy smile. "So how do you like-"

Before I can finish asking my question, I feel my phone vibrate in my pocket. I look down and see Adam's name on the screen. I decide I'll just call him back later and silence my phone.
"Do you have to go now Jenna?"

"No... Well kind of. It doesn't have to do with the phone call though. I actually just needed to find this last book and I'm all set. Plus I am getting hungry and should get back and cook up some dinner."

"Of course" he smiles. "Are you staying on campus?"

"I actually have a place off campus."

"Me too. I am at 1919 Landfair, I like it there" he states.

"Wait no way? I live there too. What are the chances?" I answer in amusement.

"What a small world. Well I was about to head back too, would you like to walk back together?"

"Yeah of course!"
