Santa Monica is only fifteen minutes from campus and I liked stopping by there to study, watch a sunset, or go shopping.

We step onto the boardwalk and I reach over for his hand. He hesitates at first but then returns my grasp. I smile at him and lead him to the restaurant.

We order our food and find a table near the pick up window.

Once we sit down I notice he immediately goes back to his phone.

"Wow must be more important than me." I remark.

"It's just work. The last time they did the adoption event and I wasn't there it was kind of a mess so I'm just checking in with the Lead" he replies without looking up.

"It's fine Mr. Manager. Are there any cute cats this time?"

"We have three today. One's a kitten and the other two are mid-age but really playful."

"Aw. I would love to stop in on the next event and play with them."

I hear our number called and get up to grab our food. We dig in and eat most of the meal in a comfortable silence.

"So how's school?" he asks.

"It's great. I didn't have to switch any of my classes and the professors seem approachable so I'm happy about that."

"That's always a bonus. Any cool topics or books?"

"This week was mostly intros but I did see I am reading more Doyle later in the quarter so that'll be a good time."

"Doyle?" He inquires.
"I've told you about him babe. He created Sherlock Holmes and I really like his stories because he has this subtle humor under all the mystery. Like Holmes actually uses drugs in the novels, it's great."

"Really. I would have never guessed." he replies half-interested while responding to a text.

I look away and sigh softly. I understand that classic literature isn't really exciting for non-English majors and that his mind was preoccupied with work, but I couldn't help but feel bothered at his lack of attention.

We finish up our meal and head towards the steps leading down towards the water. We take off our shoes and half trudge, half walk until we find a nice spot to set down the blanket. We spend the rest of the afternoon making small talk and enjoy the sunset before heading back to my place.

We are laying in my bed listening to music and I start to feel my eyelids grow heavy.

Just then Adam leans over and kisses me. I return the kiss and his hands start trailing down my body. He begins pulling up my dress when I sit up abruptly and move away from him.

"Hey I'm kinda tired, can we just chill tonight?"

"Seriously? You were saying that we should take advantage of our time earlier."

I give him a side eye for twisting my words and interpreting them to his benefit.

"That's not what- yeah I know but I am really tired now. Plus I'm on my period." I lie knowing this would get him to back off and I am really hoping he would not call my bluff.

"Uhh fine." he replies. "Well I guess I'll go home now, I work tomorrow morning so I should go."

"Okay." I mutter.

I walk with him to the door and we exchange a quick peck before he leaves.

I sigh out of frustration; his crappy mood really annoyed me today.

I look at the time. 10:13pm. It was still early and I could use a pick me up.

Without hesitation I call Sarai, one of my close friends I met at my dorm on campus.
"Hey Jen, what's up?"

"Girl let's go out!"

She laughs out loud. "We are actually drinking at my place right now, come through."

"Girl I need it! I'll be there in ten minutes."

I quickly change into pants, a floral crop top to fit with the mood from today's dress, and keep the sandals and cardigan. I grab my phone and keys and walk down the few blocks to her building.

She lets me in and I am greeted with a heavy bass coming from the speakers and a room full of welcomes from our half, or completely drunk, friends.

"Bitch it's been a minute!" she yells.

"I know! I miss living together and seeing you all the time."

"Well someone wanted her own place" she curves her lips playfully.

"Girl you know it wasn't anything against you, it's an independence thing. I love you!" and I give her a giant hug.

She laughs. "So what happen? Why do you need a drink?" she says while filling my shot glass.

"Ugh, it's stupid Adam. He's being jealous again and like he totally made today awkward. I had a decent time but it could have been better."

"Ahhhh enough about that asshole. Tonight your boyfriend is Captain Morgan and he's gonna treat you just right." We clink glasses and throw the shots back.

The alcohol warms my throat and I feel tingles down my arms. I loved Sarai for always knowing exactly what to say and how to cheer me up.

She begins refilling our glasses and I know I'll have a great time surrounded by people with positive vibes.
