THE TRIO

"Billy, hey

"Billy, hey." Beth breathed into the phone, nervously twisting and curling the cord around her fingers as she tried to quickly form a believable lie to tell her boyfriend. She was definitely not going to be able to make it to their "dinner and drive around" date tonight.

"Hello, gorgeous." Billy charmed, Beth clearly hearing his cheeky grin he so obviously was wearing over the phone. "I'm picking you up at eight, right?" he asked, his tone giddy.

Beth's heart began racing as she prepared a lie that was halfway truthful. "I'm not gonna be able to make it tonight." she said slowly, feeling her nervousness crawl through her teeth as she lied to him. "Mews is dead. A hawk got to her this morning and me and Dustin just buried her." she told him.

"Oh my god, Beth." Billy sympathized. "I'm so sorry. I know how much you loved her. I'm gonna miss her crawling on my face and sleeping there with me while I slept at your place." he said, sadness coating his tone and even though he claimed to hate Mews' guts, Beth knew deep down he loved her just as much as she did.

He often took pictures of the cat with Beth's old camera, laughing and grinning as Mews would  briefly chase the flash the camera shot at her. He always said she was a dumb little kitten, but he always mindlessly cuddled with her while he read one of Beth's books or the newspaper. He always teasingly pulled on her tail and ears, leaving him with a few scratches, but Mews never had the intention of seriously hurting one of her favorite people. (If not her favorite person).

"I'm so sorry you lost her, babe. Do you just want to have a stay at home night? I can come over and we can look through the pictures I still have of her." he offered, the sweetness in his voice nearly making Beth tear up. What did she do to deserve this perfect boyfriend?

"I think I just want to be alone tonight, Billy. But thank you so much." Beth smiled, biting her lip with anxiousness.

"It's fine, doll. Just call me if you need absolutely anything. You know that." he finished, telling her his goodbyes and softly hanging up to let her be alone.

Beth felt so guilty as she walked away from the phone, feeling her conscious weigh down on her heart heavily for lying.

"He'll understand some day, Beth." Dustin reassured.

Though he didn't necessarily like how Billy acted sometimes or the loudness of his car, Dustin had grown rather fond of Billy, and vice versa.

In public, they put up an act, which they would laugh about in private later,  that they hated each other and could kill each other if they had the option.

But in private or around Ms. Henderson and Beth, they were close to best friends, much to anyone's surprise.

Billy would tug on Dustin's curls and hold his hat above his head so Dustin couldn't reach it, earning himself a yank on his loose earring and a slap to the chest, but laughs and memories were made.

Billy and Dustin also had a secret handshake, that not even Beth was allowed to see.

Something to do with a spin and an explosion, but  Beth had never actually seen it.

They were like brothers, but no one else was allowed to know that.

Billy even had a reserved seat for Dustin that not even Beth or Max could sit in. Beth's seat was obviously the passenger seat, but the next best seat was the seat behind the driver's side.

Billy always let Dustin pick what cassette to put in when he rode in the Camaro, he was special to Billy. The little brother he'd always wanted but never had.

Though the boys would never let anyone else know that, they were secretly best friends.

"Are those for Mr. or Mrs. Wheeler?" Dustin asked, pointing to the flowers that Steve held, walking up to the Wheeler's home where Dustin and Beth were just leaving.

"No." Steve said, very confused.

"Good." Beth said, snatching the flowers and going to plop herself in the backseat of Steve's car, allowing Dustin to take the front seat.

"Hey! What the hell?" Steve griped.

"Nancy isn't home." Dustin told him.

"Where is she?" Steve asked, slight worry in his voice.

"Doesn't matter." Beth said in a sing-song voice.

"We have bigger problems than your love life. Do you still have that bat?" Dustin asked as he walked to the car.

"Bat? What bat?" Steve asked, his face still blank.

"The one with the nails?" Dustin emphasized, swinging the flowers gently for extra help.

"Why?" Steve asked, his tone laced with annoyance.

"We'll explain it on the way." Beth called out, watching Steve slowly walk to the car.

"Now?"

"Now!"

Steve ran to the car, turning his keys into the ignition and driving to Dustin and Beth's house as the two siblings curtly directed.

Beth couldn't believe that Steve "Pretty Boy" Harrington was coming along, but, off they went.

okay the end was kind of cringe but it is what it is.
you support, love and endless ideas in the previous author's note i uploaded was amazing and i thank you so much!
you guys will never understand how much the support means to a small author like me.
also, i know these chapters are short, i just need to space the time frames out to fit how i want the plot to fall into place. they will get longer as the plot progresses! (i know this is unedited, i will fix any mistakes later!)
happy reading!! 💙
