Alphonsus Donnelly's POV

My eyes flickered to Declan's sleeping form on the passenger side and then straight back to focus on the road ahead. The poor boy was wiped and that was understandable, so was I. It had been a long day... first of all investigating what looked like a case of gang revenge and then listening to the Mcpartlin kids story. Jesus that was heavy hitting, no wonder the boy's got issues. It was certainly a surprise to find out Dec knew him though, he'd kept that one pretty quiet.

Pulling up into the familiar drive way I noticed the kitchen light was still on, a candle in the pitch black coating of the night. I sighed knowing exactly what was coming.

"Declan, it's time to wake up." I said softly shaking him awake, he did stir slightly but kept his eyes closed pouting as he shuffled in his seat as his hands felt around his surroundings. "Anth?"

"Sorry buddy it's just me. Anthony is still at the hospital." Dec's head shot up and I looked at him with a confused expression. I knew how Declan could get attached very easily but this was like nothing I'd ever seen.

"What? No! I wanted to stay with him! He's all alone in the hospital dad!"

"Come on, you fell asleep after 5minutes in the room with the lad. You're no good to him exhausted so get your butt to bed and we'll visit him in the morning. He's a tough kid, he'll be fine." Declan continued to pout for a moment and then nodded, climbing out of the car.

"Declan Joseph Oliver Donnelly where have you been?! I've been worried sick!You could have at least called to say you were alright and what is this me getting a call from the school saying you weren't at your classes!?!" Dec stood frozen, feeling a little too tired to face the wrath of his mother. I didn't blame him.

"Calm down Anne please, I'll explain everything. Declan go to bed please." I kicked off my work shoes, watching  as my youngest son scrabbled up the stairs before I turned to walk into the kitchen. Anne following closely behind.

"What's going on Fonsey, where have you both been?"

"At the hospital-"

"THE HOSPITAL!! O good lord! What happened? Is Declan okay?! Did someone hurt him again?! If they did-"

"Anne shusshhh please" I interrupted rubbing my temples, "it's nothing like that Declan is fine and healthy. This is exactly why I didn't call you." I put the kettle on tiredly and turned back to my very overdramatic wife. "I've already had the talk with Declan about skipping school, but this was completely justified. He was worried about his friends safety and rightfully so."

"Can you just explain fully Alph it's very late." She nagged, tapping her fingers on the work surface impatiently. However, I knew it was just because she cared. I explained everything from turning up at the scene to my talk with Anthony in the hospital, keeping out the particularly upsetting details.

"Oh my, the poor boy! And poor Decky! He didn't mention this new friend though, that's not like him."

"Ummm, we will be going to the hospital in the morning because Declan didn't want Anthony there alone. I have a suggestion though and I'm not sure how you may feel about it." She nodded and I continued. "Anthony's mother and Sister are MIA and from his file, I and can't see any extended family. He has no where else to go other than a foster-care placement and I really don't think that'll do him any good, he's been through so much already and I can tell it's taken it's toll..."
