I heard a loud groan followed by violent heaving and throwing up. The idea made me feel a little nauseous but I pushed it aside and with a gentle tap, opened the cubicle door. Stepping in I took in the shockingly sad sight. The usually tall, confident dark haired boy was sat, legs sprawled out across the floor, arms resting against the edge of the toilet seat for support whilst his head was bowed down over the bowl. He panted heavily between throwing up the contents of his stomach and waves of nausea. His white t-shirt showed clear sweat patches and his hair was sticking up in all directions but also slightly matted over his forehead.
As I stood there, not sure what to do, the taller boy threw up violently once again although it was more like heaving now as he had nothing left to dispose of. His body convulsed with the reflex and his toned back muscles rippled with every breath.
I reached into my bag and pulled out my bottle of water. Anthony sighed defeatedly before running a shaky hand through his damp locks. As I crouched down he finally seemed to notice my presence. Our eyes met and his deep blue orbs went from exhausted and sad to fiery and angry so fast I couldn't be sure if I'd really seen that rare hint of vulnerability.
He moved his body forward looking like he was ready to argue and possibly attack, but his body protested and he sagged back against the wall of the cubical and the toilet. Seeing this was the only chance I had to help. I reached out nervously to offer up my bottle of water, perhaps a little nervous the disgruntled lion would bite my hand off.
He eyed the bottle suspiciously for a minute but instead of telling me to fuck off, he pushed his back off the wall slightly and reached his hand out. I flinched a little, my nerves overtaking me. For someone who would be usually be on the receiving end of punches from this type of guy it was like sitting in a pit with a grizzly bear whilst wearing a sign that said 'Eat me.'
However, he'd protected me today, so I wasn't going to leave him to suffer alone. He furrowed his brows at my reaction, his hand stopping mid way, I realised my mistake and understood his hesitation. He grasped hold of the bottle after I closed the remaining distance between our hands. The arm that wasn't stretched out was clutching his ribs and I noticed how he would wince and then clutch them tighter... it made me wonder what had happened to get him in such a bad state.
The room was silent apart from the unscrewing of the water bottle lid. I stayed knelt down, my butt resting on my heals, opposite the slouched sick boy. We must have made quite an interesting picture; a shy nerd sat on the floor of a toilet cubicle with the stereotypical bad boy character as we shared water as if having a picnic.
I watched, unable to look away, as he took a sip of the water- his Adam's apple bobbing up and down as he swallowed. The sight had my chest tightening and my eyes widening. This guy was basically sex on legs even when he was sick... it almost wasn't fair.
I got a taste of my own medicine when he'd taken a few large gulps and started to stare right back at me with an emotionless expression. The silence was killing me and I found myself needing to fill the empty space. "Are you okay?" He raised an eyebrow and I realised the stupidity of my question.
"Do I look okay to you?"
"Well-uh... no not really." Honesty's the best policy after all.
"I've definitely been better." He grumbled. I nodded my head realising that was all he was going to say on the matter. The other boy seemed perfectly content with the silence. He tilted his head back to rest against the bricks behind him, rubbing a hand over his face before holding his head in his hand and shutting his eyes against the pain.
"Headache?"
"Aye."
"Here... these might help." I handed him some standard painkillers but he just looked at the pills in fear and his face went dark again.
