A thank you to @Rand0mE1 for being the first to comment! I'm glad you enjoy the story! <3I hand Ms. Stevens my permission slip and step onto the bus. Layla steps in behind me, and we walk towards the back of the bus and take a seat. A few minutes later, the doors close and the engine starts. I strike up a conversation with Layla, and we chat the entire way to the museum.
As the driver is parking the bus, Ms. Stevens stands up to speak, "I want you all to be on your best behavior. Listen to the guide and be respectful." She looks around the bus, making sure everyone heard her little speech.
I nod in acknowledgment and stand up along with the rest of the class, walking towards the bus doors.
The last person steps off the bus, and the group walks toward the building. As we walk into the lobby, a young woman - probably mid twenties - walks up to us with a smile.
"Hi! I'm Alice, and I will be your tour guide today, follow me please."
Alice steps towards a desk, and reaches for a clipboard. She mumbles "Science class from Riverbend High at 10:45 a.m., check." As she puts a mark on a piece of paper.
"Let's start, shall we?" she says, beckoning us to follow her.
We walk into a room with a few security guards in it. "Before we start, your bags must be checked, as we do not want any harm coming to you, employees, or the creatures we shall be seeing today."
After everyone has made it through security, Alice steps toward a door, and gestures towards it as she speaks, "Through this door is the first room of our tour. However, I do need to go over some rules before we start. As I would assume you are all aware of, we are seeing insects and arachnids, however, they shall in no way or form touch us. I hope that will comfort anyone with any sort of fear of these creatures. Do not touch the cases holding the creatures, and do not shout or make loud noises. Stay with the group at all times, and feel free to ask any questions! So, without further delay, let's go!"
She steps through the doorway, and the rest of us follow, beginning the tour.
The tour is mildly interesting, but I drone out most of Alice's speech as she gives facts about each type of bug we encounter. I focus on observing the creatures, admiring colors, shapes, features of the bugs, etc.
Then we step into a room with computers, with screens opened on what looks to be research files. "Here at Florfield Museum we pride ourselves on learning about new insect and arachnid species, whether we can observe them in real life or read about them online and create our own hypotheses, we enjoy helping to expand the understanding of the world we live in. In fact, we have a very unique arachnid specimen we are studying in the labs at this very moment. On these computers you can find research files that our scientists have written and published. You might find some very interesting facts."
I step towards one of the computers and start looking at the information these scientists have gathered. It is very interesting to me, as science is something I often enjoy. I'm mostly interested in engineering and chemical science, but reading reports by real scientists is very cool.
I am completely submerged in the world of science when I feel a sharp pain on my leg. I quickly look down to see a spider crawling away from me.
I don't think that spider was supposed to be out here...
I'm about to let Alice know about the arachnid, when a man frantically bursts through the doors. "Have you seen it? Has anyone seen it?!" he screeches, looking around the room.
"Seen what, Joe?" Alice asks.
"The - the spider! The one we've been studying! I went on my lunch break, and as I was walking back to my lab, I happened to look in the specimen area - and it was gone!"
At this point some of the class starts to freak out.
"A SPIDER?"
"Is it in here?"
"I don't want to get attacked!"
I calmly raise my hand and say, "Pardon me, sir, but do you by any chance mean this spider?" I point towards the wall, where the spider I had seen earlier is currently standing.
Joe visibly relaxes, as he walks over and carefully takes the spider. "Thank you!" he says to me, "nothing happened right? No one got hurt - the spider didn't do anything?"
I open my mouth to let him know that I believe it bit me, when an alarm goes off.
Joe sighs, "I think they finally realized this little guy was missing. I'll be going now, continue with your tour!"
He leaves the room. I shrug - so what if the spider bit me, it's not that big of a deal.
