"How was your day?" Caleb asked, dropped his lips to mine for a second and smiled.
I heard Matt go "aww" from beside me on the couch, but decided to ignore him.
"Pretty good, how about you?" I grinned.
It was in that moment, a few weeks later that I finally felt like Caleb was all the way comfortable with being in a relationship with, well... a guy.
He no longer turned his head away when I tried to kiss him in front of anyone, including Matt and Danny, in fact he even initiated it.
This habit of not wanting to show me any kind of affection in front of people alone had led to more than a couple of arguments, but we had always been able to figure it out.
And apparently, he was now over it.
My boyfriend left for the kitchen, closely followed by Milo who seemed just as excited as I was about Caleb being home.
I got up, also tagging along, quite thankful to have an excuse to escape the teasing looks from Matt and Danny.
I wrapped my arms around Caleb's waist, propping my chin up on his chest so that I could look at him, "I missed you."
The brown haired boy smiled at me before ducking down to press a soft kiss to my lips, "Of course you did. You want some coffee?"
I shook my head and pulled Caleb even closer. I had no intention of letting him go so that he could make coffee.
"What's gotten you so affectionate?" he chuckled, but made no move to let me go either.
"Dunno," I mumbled, "I just... yeah, I don't know."
I found myself wanting to tell Caleb that I loved him quite often lately, but never went through with it.
I knew he probably wouldn't say it back, so I just decided to play it safe."Hey," said the taller boy then, and smiled, "you wanna go out to eat tonight?"
I was a little surprised at the proposal but nodded nonetheless, "Sure, where to?"
"I don't know, just... a restaurant."
"A nice restaurant?" I smiled teasingly and Caleb rolled his eyes.
He poked my nose with his index finger gently, "You'll just have to find out."
It was a few hours later, that Caleb pulled into the parking lot of a restaurant I hadn't been to before. It looked cozy enough from the outside, but when we finally stepped through the doors, I realized that it actually was a really nice restaurant.
I glanced up at Caleb, who I felt was avoiding my gaze intentionally as he stepped up to the counter and said, "Winter for two?"
The waiter nodded and smiled, leading us to a table relatively far in the back. It was nice, a candle in the middle, fabric napkins and all that jazz. I didn't think I'd ever been in a restaurant this nice.
"You made a reservation?" I asked as we were sitting down.
"Yeah, I mean... I figured they might be a little busy on a Friday night so..." the brunette boy trailed off.
"Is this a date?" I continued to question.
"So, I'm thinking... bruschetta as a starter?" he offered, flicking through the menu.
"Sure," I agreed, smiling wide, because him not answering my question also answered my question.
We had good food and Caleb even ordered some wine for the both of us.
"So, what are we even celebrating tonight?" I tried to ask again.
"Nothing in particular," my boyfriend replied, taking a sip of his wine, "just in a good mood tonight."
I nodded and fought to suppress a smile because Caleb was just so... endearing when he was all nervous and awkward.
"I feel like such an adult... going out to an actual restaurant... having wine that costs more than 10 dollars..." I chuckled.
"Right?" Caleb agreed, "It's not too bad, though."
"Definitely not complaining. Especially if I get to do it with you."
"Ugh, shut up." Caleb rolled his eyes, but I could tell he was trying to fight a smile.
When we finished our drinks, Caleb paid and we ventured out to the parking lot.
"Uh," I started, "I'm actually feeling a little tipsy."
"Yeah, me too," admitted my boyfriend, "Should I call an Uber?"
"Or, we could walk?" I proposed, linking our hands together and swinging them back and forth softly.
Caleb sighed, but agreed nonetheless, pressing a barely-there kiss to the top of my head.
And so we began to walk along the dark streets, from one pool of light to another, talking about anything and everything.
My chest was about ready to burst from happiness. Was this was being happily in love felt like? How had I been able to live without this feeling all this time? Did Caleb feel as happy as I did? Had he felt this before?
I could barely grasp the reality of me actually being with Caleb, after all we'd been through, to finally be happy. It felt like pure bliss.
"What are you thinking about?" said Caleb, and I looked up at him, startled.
"Just... how happy I am."
He chuckled, "Cheesy."
The brown haired boy cupped my cheek and turned my head towards him to place his lips on mine gently."Seriously though," I inquired when he had pulled away, "what's gotten into you? You have some great epiphany or something?"
"Oh my god," Caleb groaned, "Can't you just enjoy it while it lasts?"
"Sure," I grinned, and I couldn't even get annoyed at Caleb's snappy tone of voice - that's how happy I was.
We got home when Matt and Danny had already gone to bed.
I kicked off my shoes, shrugged off my jacket and followed Caleb up to his bedroom like it was my second nature.I was no longer constantly on guard when things were good, waiting for Caleb's mood to switch and him to flip out on me.
I could finally just enjoy being with him, and so I sighed a very happy sigh as I let myself fall onto Caleb's comfortable mattress.
"We should go on dates more often," I decided, "Take art or pottery classes..."
"Art or pottery classes?" scoffed the brown haired boy, shooting me a disbelieving glance while getting under the covers, "That's so gay."
"You know what's gay, Caleb?" I smiled sweetly and kissed his cheek, "You. You are."
"Whatever," he grunted and put his arm around my shoulders.
"You okay?" I asked.
"Yeah, why?"
"Because I called you gay and you didn't say anything."
"I'm tired," Caleb said indifferently, "I'll smack you across the face in the morning."
"Can't wait," I giggled and Caleb kissed the back of my neck softly before we settled down to sleep.
