"you're wasting time being an idol. you're even having health issues because of that dream of yours. you should've just stayed here in california," i could hear my mom's voice telling those words to me, as i flinched.
i was in the dorm, wondering what on earth i should do while not yet going to the yg building. but then, she decided to give me a call. i'm not really that on good terms with my mom, ever since dad died. ever since he died, she started blaming me and my pointless dream about why dad died, instead of how she paid less attention to him when she was the one right next to him every day.
it's been years, but she still convinces herself that it was all my fault.
"it's not a waste of my time, mom. besides, being an idol makes me happy. even if i become sick, as long as i make people happy, i'm fine with that," i answered, in which i heard a scoff from the other line.
"stupid beliefs. this is why your dad died-"
i ended the call, before tears even spilled out of my eyes. it was really crazy how she can just blame me about it.
i miss my dad, but most importantly, i miss how my family didn't use to be like this. mom didn't use to be like this. she used to be so supportive of me and my dream, until the incident with dad. how she turned against me all of a sudden, i don't know.
i put my phone in my pocket, and then picked up my board from the side. i opened the door, and then went out of the dorm with my board.
i kicked my board up, running inside the building because of the people outside who happened to probably try taking a glance at the idols. i was almost caught by one, but i was fast enough to get inside.
panting, i started walking deeper into the building. i started walking faster to hide my crying state to the staff, but i was surprised when one caught my hand.
i widened my eyes, not knowing what to do in case it was one of our managers. what if they suspend me or they won't let me get back to being an idol if they found out my mom didn't want me being here?
"sooji? why are you crying?" asked a familiar voice, and that was when i broke down.
i hugged donghyuk, as he caressed my hair while i cried. i gripped on his shirt as tears kept spilling down my eyes. i didn't know why, but somehow i found it relieving whenever i cried to him. it was as if he was comforting me even without doing anything.
"shh, what happened?" he whispered, and i blinked away the tears.
"i can't take my mom anymore. ever since-"
"sooji?" there came yet another voice, making me stop crying.
i was frozen in my spot, in donghyuk's arms, as i heard jaemin unnie.
i could hear her footsteps getting closer, but i tried ignoring them. why was i? well, every time they open up the topic about donghyuk, i always avoid it or change the topic. i never did like lying to them for way too much.
"donghyuk, what happened?" asked jaemin unnie.
"i don't-"
"it's my mom, unnie," i answered, and then the next thing i knew, unnie took me away from donghyuk and then into her arms.
"hey, why didn't you tell us? also, about the two of you dating. we thought you haven't met each other yet until the collab," said jaemin unnie, making donghyuk stand awkwardly by the side.
"i didn't know how to," i said, thinking it was a good way to mask things out. and unnie actually bought it.
"okay. we understand. anyway, donghyuk, can i take her away now?" asked jaemin unnie, making me look at donghyuk.
"u-um, sure, guess i'd just check on her later," said donghyuk, and then smiled before he walked away.
i watched his retreating back and started thinking. what would have happened if ceo didn't propose this dating publicity thing? will we actually date or not? even right now, i'm not even sure if my feelings for him are that strong. did he actually like me enough to date me, whether the ceo says so or not?
i kept overthinking about that, and i was only woken up to reality when unnie ruffled my hair and then grinned at me.
"you've got us, okay? even donghyuk, and ikon, i'm sure. we're always here for you,"
i wish.
