Em wakes up to the sound of Rachel crying from her bassinet.
"I got it baby," David assures her, getting up from the cot the nurses set up for him in the room.
"Thank you," she smiles sleepily.
David changes her diaper and it takes a while because he's still a little traumatized after her first poop explosion. After successfully changing her and cleaning her up, he puts her back in the bassinet and falls back asleep.
Him and Em remain asleep until a nurse comes in at 9am.
"Good morning, Mr. Pastrnak and Ms. Rodriguez. How are you guys doing this morning?" she asks, walking in with her mobile computer.
"We're really good. We've been taking turns on taking care of Rachel overnight," Em explains.
"That's great to hear. How is Rachel doing? Anything that would be a cause for concern or anything unusual?" she asks.
"No, not at all. Everything's been normal, even her poop," Em informs her.
"That's great to hear. I'm just gonna check on your stitches and see how those are healing. Also, would you want to bathe here before you leave or at home?" she asks.
"I would prefer bathing at home, no offense," Em replies sheepishly.
"Don't worry, hun. I completely understand. Lots of women prefer to be in the comfort in their own home for their first bath after giving birth," she explains, while checking her stitches.
"The stitches look to be healing nicely. You'll be using these special underwear for another week or so. Obviously, when you have your postnatal checkup next week, they'll check to see if you need it for additional time. I don't think you will need to because your stitches are healing nicely," she explains.
"I would love for them to heal as quickly as possible. I'm tired of the soreness," Em groans, her vagina feeling so heavy and sore.
"I brought you both breakfast. You guys can start eating it while I check up on little Rachel here," she explains.
As if right on cue, Rachel wakes up and starts crying. Em groans and gets up from the bed, making her way to the bassinet. She lifts Rachel up into her arms carefully.
"Ya ya ya, mamí! No llores! (Enough, enough, enough! Don't cry!)" Em shushes her, rocking her gently.
At the sound of her mother's soothing voice, Rachel stops crying. Em gives Rachel her pacifier and she starts sucking on it immediately. The nurse checks Rachel's vitals and takes other measurements. Luckily, this examination doesn't involve shots.
Em remembers having to watch Rachel screech in pain as doctors gave her multiple shots the day she was born.
"Everything looks great for Rachel. So I'll be back in a couple hours to get your discharge papers all in order," she replies.
She leaves the room, leaving Em and David alone with Rachel. Em and David eat while watching their daughter stare up at the ceiling absentmindedly and entertain herself while flapping her arms and legs.
Once Em and David finish eating, Rachel starts getting fussy, fidgeting and whining. She spits out the pacifier and starts crying. Em sighs and lifts her from the bassinet. She carries her onto the bed and gets comfortable, before taking her right breast out of her gown. Rachel latches onto it right away, sucking greedily.
"Look at my hungry baby," David chuckles, finding amusement in it.
"Are your mom and brother coming to the house today?" she asks him.
