(Three Years Ago, Day 1)
In order to get to the highschool, he must drive by the red cross station. It should be easy, Garrett think to himself as he drive over the railroad tracks and into the yards of houses to avoid the car that plug up the road. Maybe someone will be at the Red Cross Station; afterall, thats where the TV told people to go.
He turns on the radio in the truck as he continues to drive through the yards over the pickett fences, through the hedges. "Attention, this is your president Barack......." Before the message could finish Garrett changes the channel.
"You did this." The radio blurs out. "These are your sins coming back to haunt you." Again, Garrett changes the channel.
"More than half of the world has gone black." A man on the radio bawled. He was clearly stressed out. "The United States Government has declared matrical law in the entire country. The remaining military forces have pulled back to the Rocky Moutains hoping to regroup and plan another offensive against the undead army...." Garrett shuts the radio off. He doesn't want to hear any of that. He knows that the human race is in trouble.
He shifts the truck in park as he comes closer to the Red Cross Station. He leaves the bag of guns inside the truck. Then he stops, he hears nothing. Garrett walks to the door of the building he reaches to open it but, the door is already halfway opened. He walks inside the building.
“Hello?” Garrett shouted into the building and getting no response, not even any moans. He looks inside every room in the building. Then he walks out the back doors and into the back yard of the station. The yard has a chain linked fence protecting the outside world from it. Inside the fence there are easy-ups set up. There were a few camping tents, but more Easy-ups then any other kind of tent. Some of the easy-ups that Garrett can see have tables with medical supplies on them. Taking a closer look Garrett saw that there were needles and other medical waste. He then came across an enclosed easy-up, one of the sides were torn down and he looks inside. He soon regrets looking; seeing the was blood and guts covering the ground and sides of the tent and tables inside practically makes him loose the little food that he has in his stomach.
Garrett walks back inside the building and goes over to another table and sees a map. He sees that the CDC in Pittsburgh is circled in red marker. He looks through the papers on that table and comes across a map. He folds up the map and puts it in his pocket. He then sees a door that is closed; he didn’t go in that room before so he walked over to it. He opened the door and there was a puddle of blood on the ground, next to the blood, a journal.
He flips to the last page and he read it out loud to himself. “The vaccines are not working….we are going to have to try something else. I’ve been bit by one of my patients; they put her down after that…..I’m starting to feel weak. I closed the door to this closet and no one knows I’m in here. I’m losing blood fast, I don’t know how long I have, and it’s like hell out there. I can hear people screaming. If a doctor gets bit they gun him and the patient down….it’s happening a lot….I think…….” Then it suddenly ends in mid sentence. Garrett walks back out to the main room and puts the journal on a table.
He walks outside and goes to one of the cars out front he starts to go through it. He happens to glance in the back and sees a baby carrier, there is blood on it. Garrett walks away from the car in disgust. He looks down the hill and sees a person walking towards him slowly, in a stagger. This female zombie is a young adult and has an olive complexion, and wavy black hair worn mid-length. She is very tall, somewhat thin, and is dressed very modestly. She is a bit decayed and is missing an arm. For an instant, Garrett thought that this Walker looked familar, he could have known her at one point in time, but not know. It's time to go.
Garrett gets into the truck and drives off.
Author Note: Hey Guys! Yes, I realize that the CDC isn't in Pittsburgh, but I figured it works for my story if I have it there. It's a really short chapter than I'm used to writing. I just figured everything I had in minded didn't really fit in this chapter. I thought it would seem more personal to show that there is a government still functioning, at some extent and also to show that there is no help, at least from the government in this part of the country.
Hope you all like the story set up. The interview part of the story is a very small part of the book and won't be in every chapter.
