The rotting wooden door creaked open slowly and echoing footsteps of the small group invaded the silence that hung like a cloak around the house. A thick carpet of dust clung to every object, the rays of moonlight shining through the shattered glass windows catching on the particles suspended in the stagnant air.
They moved deliberately, dust billowing into clouds as they passed. They continued to move through the house, kicking up more dust until it was difficult to see through the billions of particles that now swirled in the air. Inside was dank, gloomy, cold. The furniture, untouched in decades, was decaying and frayed. The floor was awash with the detritus of wildlife.
According too Hershel, the house had been abandoned in the great depression. When the land around it had become a dust bowl there had been no point in staying or trying to sell. The roof now sagged in the middle and were it not for a hole that let the pooled water escape, it would have caved in long ago. The paint, on the outside, had been white and was peeling off. It looked out of place amid the dark of rotting wood.
Garrett and Glenn have been to this house more than once during their stay at the farm. It was a safe place, no Walkers seemed to be in the area and it was right off the road.
The group didn't have much supplies. They left most of it behind back at the farm. They were all shaken up with what just happened. Rick and his group were gone. Nobody knew where they could have went. Where they dead? It was possible.
"Where's Adam at?" Kenny wondered with Deanna at his side. The two of them didn't know what happened too Adam. Neither did Mitchel.
A strong silence came into the room. Nobody wanted to talk about it. It was Adam, that scared kid that everyone knew and that everyone liked. He was with them from the beginning. How could he just be gone?
Still, no one says a word. The three that don't know suddenly start to piece together the puzzle. A muttered cry comes from Kenny as Deanna hugs him from behind. "He's dead, isn't he?" Mitchel asked from the corner of the room.
Garrett nods, bringing the answer. "So is Jimmy." He added. "The RV became overrun, me and Adam got out the back window. I was taking care of a Walker....Then I turned around and Adam was being swarmed.....I couldn't do a damn thing."
"What do we do now?" Rebecca asked. Her voice was shaken, as she tried to change the subject.
"The hell do you think we do?" William cursed at her and everyone else in the room. "We go out and find Rick and the others."
Lucas laughed sightly, not because it was funny. But because William was right. "Your right for a change."
"No one is going anywhere." Garrett firmly interrupted. He sounded like a dictator giving orders. Like the first day at the high school where Mitchel was in charge. "The chances of finding Rick and the others are slim, they could be miles away for all we know. We can't go wondering out in the woods looking for people who think we are all dead."
Connor has a confused look on his face. "Who thinks we are dead?"
"The others.....Rick....Shane, Glenn, Andrea, Hershel...all of them." Garrett stopped naming them, figuring that they were all dead anyways and didn't want to bring them up. "For all they know...We. Are. Dead......We have to assume the worst for them as well."
"Fuck you." William shuttered. He was more concerned for the others lives. "You the big shit now?" He looked right at Garrett. "I don't remember having a vote that said you were supreme leader. I sure as hell didn't vote for you." His dark fiery eyes pierced Garrett's skin with extreme anger and tore at his soul, if only looks could kill.
