MYSTIC FALLS, VIRGINIA

Sitting quietly beside Alaric's temporarily dead body, Buffy clutched his hand tightly as she watched him in despair.

God, letting herself feel again really sucked!

Taking a shaky breath she let her mind wander slightly; if Klaus killing Alaric worked then that meant when he woke up it would be the other one.

The one that hated all Originals...including her.

What was more terrifying than that though, was the realization of what she was going to have to do if it was Evil-Alaric that woke up.

Logically speaking as The Slayer who was refusing the end the vampire species, Alaric's darker side would most likely respond to her.

Which meant she was going to have to tap into that darkness inside of her. The demon side of her that craved chaos and begged her to rip heads off without remorse.

Letting that side of her take over was horrifying.

What if she killed Alaric by accident?

As all of the possible worst-case scenarios started rushing through her head, Buffy felt herself panicking as her heart started beating frantically against her chest.

She needed some air before she completely lost her mind and started down a downward spiral.

Lying in her bed, Elena turned onto her side unable to escape her plaguing thoughts that refused to let her drift off. Spotting the bed next to her empty, Elena froze before sure enough she spotted Xander at the table with a bottle of beer in his hands.

He wasn't sleeping either, he just sat there staring out the window.

As she watched him she couldn't help the way her heart started to pick up. As much as she didn't want to admit it because of Anya and all the complications that come with it...she had feelings for him.

Strong feelings.

But she knew it was wrong.

As though he could feel her gaze he glanced in her direction, quickly she looked away pushing herself further against the pillow hiding her face.

Closing her eyes she stayed quiet before she felt the bed move beside her.

Opening her eyes, Elena gulped.

There he was, her sister's best friend laying beside her.

Smiling at him she took in a shaky breath before sighing "You never told me that. The you from the future."

Xander sighed refusing to turn his head to look at her as he spoke to the ceiling "Because, I didn't want to admit it. I knew deep down he wasn't me...I just...I needed an excuse out..."

Elena sighed sadly and looked at him with a sweet smile, she knew he felt horrible about leaving Anya at the altar, and she wasn't saying that he shouldn't feel bad, what he did was horrible, there was no denying that.

"Yes, you did a terrible thing...but cut yourself some slack Xand, if you had married her, it wouldn't have been fair to her or...you."

Xander looked over at her and couldn't help but admired her stunning features, taking in her beauty.

She truly was a good soul, one of the kindest people he had ever met, she was kind and smart and selfless...and as much as he would deny it...he was completely in love with her.

When her eyes connected with his, Elena took a shaky breath before rolling onto her back and staring up at the ceiling. As her breathing picked up she couldn't help but panic slightly.
