The continuous beeping of the heart rate monitor was the only sound in the white hospital room. Charlie Swan bent over while sitting in a chair beside the bed. He looked tired and depressed. His clothes dirty and hair unwashed. Worry coating his brown eyes. Before him in the bed was Charlotte, his sweet niece. Her eyes closed and body unmoving. It had been two days since the newborn attack on Bella and Charlotte. No one knew why she stayed unconscious. Charlie didn't move when he heard the door open.

"Charlie. You need to sleep." Carlisle sighed, clipboard in hand.

Charlie Swan sat up and kept his eyes on his niece while he spoke, "So it's true. All of it."

"All of it." Carlisle nodded and closed the door behind him.

"So you're one of them. Your whole family. Edward. You're all vampires." Charlie whispered and ran his fingers through his hair.

"Yes."

"The accident in Arizona... Bella didn't fall down the stairs did she?" Charlie narrowed his eyes and took a deep breath.

"No."

"I want the truth. All of it. About both of them. Billy told me all he could, but he couldn't explain why there are vampires guarding over Charlotte. Or why those three men have been itching to come in this room." Charlie patted the chair next to him, "And you're going to give me those answers. What has your family gotten my two girls mixed up in?"

Carlisle sat down slowly and set his clipboard on the end table, "It's a long story. Long for both of them. Weird do I begin?"

"From the moment you became what you are." Charlie mumbled staring intently now at his watch.

"I see. It's a long story."

"As long as my girls are breathing I have time."

"I was born 1640 to a religious family. I don't remember much but I do know my father was a so called, Vampire Hunter. When I was in my early twenties I was shot by mistake on a hunt. The man who shot me refused to admit his guilt, so he threw me in the sewers to die. Lied to my father saying the vampire grabbed me and stole me away. I was dying slowly and painfully. That's when I met Iris Volturi."

"Iris... That's the woman who picked me up from that station?" Charlie sat back and was listening.

"Yes. She took pity on me and changed me."

"The change... What's it like?"

"Burning. It felt like my entire body was on fire. I couldn't stop screaming. Iris took me to a cabin deep in the woods. For three days, I screamed. When it was done I was horrified by what I was. I wanted to kill myself. Iris knew I wouldn't be able to. She understood how I felt, but she wouldn't free me."

"What do you mean couldn't?"

"I tried everything. Starvation. Jumping. Slitting my wrists. Drowning. Shooting myself. Nothing worked. My body was cold and hard like stone. No weapon pierced me. They broke against me. I no longer needed to breathe, so drowning was out of the question. When I jumped I broke the rocks I landed on. I had become immortal."
