Mr. Buckingham, a Stanford Law graduate, is the youngest of three, but at the ripe young age of 45, he was known as the best civil defense lawyer in the state of California. He occasionally traveled and his name was known worldwide. His specialty, Murder.

"Lindsey, are you ready for the next case?" Christine, his assistant attorney questions.

"Yeah, I'll meet you there. I'm going to run and get some coffee." Lindsey nods exiting the small courtroom to head to the bigger one on a different floor.

"Remember, we only have thirty minutes," Christine warns heading in the opposite direction.

With coffee in hand, as he's getting on the elevator a voice calls out.

"Please hold the elevator." Lindsey stops and places his hand over the door.

He watches as a woman with long blonde hair, curled at the ends, wearing a red dress and black blazer runs down the hall. Her red high heels clicking on the tile floor.

As they're sitting in awkward silence, the elevator jolts. LIndsey quickly holds his coffee away from his body to avoid spilling on himself as she falls into the arm holding his briefcase. He wraps it around her to steady them both.

"Are you alright?" Lindsey asks when the elevator comes to a halt.

"I'm fine, are you?" She asks.

"Yeah, I'm good." Lindsey smiles.

"Well, that's good. Maybe we should call for help." The woman states, sharp red fingernail reaching out to press the emergency button.

When the alarm quits, she turns to Lindsey.

"How long do you think it'll take for them to get us out?" She asks.

"I don't know...I hope you're not claustrophobic." Lindsey chuckles.

"Oh no, not at all, it's just that...Today's my first day on a new job and I don't want to be late." She shakes her head.

"You aren't from around here are you?" Lindsey notices.

"No," She shakes her head.

"I didn't think I heard Valley in your voice." He replies causing her to giggle.

"No, Phoenix, Arizona." She answers.

Just then the elevator starts up again, allowing them both to get on with their day, both exiting a the same time.

"Case number A98310. State versus Mary-Anne Mallette." The judge announces.

"Lindsey Buckingham for the defense." Lindsey stands up.

"Where's the prosecutor?" Judge Collins looks around.

"Your honor, I apologize for being late but I was unavoidably detained. Stephanie Nicks, Assitant District Attorney for the state." The elevator girl walks in.

Lindsey's mouth widens and he turns to her applying a slight smile to his face. "Hello."

"Well, hello. The um elevator put me behind, I was late for a meeting which made me late for this." She apologizes.

"I didn't know..." Lindsey starts.

"I didn't know either. But how could we have?" Stephanie laughs.

"Well, Good Luck," Lindsey says.

"Thank you, good luck to you too." She turns away.

"Alright, the plea and arraignment." The judge pushes.

Lindsey and Christine stand up with their client. "Your honor the defendant has been advised of her rights. Waved reading of the inditement and pleads not guilty waves time."

"Alright, well first available slot is a week from tomorrow." The judge states.

"That is acceptable to the state you honor." Stephanie nods.

"Fine for the defense as well, the defense also requests bail be waved and the defendant be released on her own cognisant," Lindsey adds.

"Your honor, this is a capital murder case..." Stephanie argues.

"The defendant has no priors, not even a traffic violation." Lindsey fights.

"Your honor, her driving isn't the problem." Stephanie states

"My client is a life-long resident of this state and gainfully employed." Lindsey barks.

"Yes, she is a nurse. It is through her employment that the state contends she brutally murdered the decedent." Stephanie hisses.

"The prosecution has circumstantial evidence, we have no reason to believe my client will leave her jurisdiction." Lindsey barks.

"Which we seriously question." Stephanie fires back.

"Council, you will argue to the court not each other. Bail is denied at this time." The judge bangs the gavel.

Lindsey apologizes to his client, and he catches up with Stephanie who's walking out the door.

"Uh, you're very good." Lindsey looks at her.

"Why thank you. So are you." She smiles.

"Can I talk to you for a minute?" Lindsey pulls her aside.

She nods and leans against the wall.

"Jack Christopher was one of the richest men in California, who wasn't in the entertainment industry. Why do you suppose someone that was going to marry him, want to kill him?" Lindsey questions.

"He was going to marry her, please..." She huffs.

Lindsey sighs but digs in his jacket pocket pulling out his payment, a 300,000 dollar engagement ring. Stephanie looks at it wide-eyed.

"Well I can't give you motive but I can give you everything else." Stevie winks walking away.

A/N

So I was watching an old TV show entitled Matlock, with my father while I was home visiting and I was instantly inspired.

With that being said, I know nothing about the legal system so most of the court cases I use in this story are taken from Matlock. I am in no way trying to steal anything and to make sure that I'm not copywriting, I've tried to change up the stories slightly and I've changed names and stuff.

I hope you all read it and enjoy it!

Much Love,
