After practice was over I limped over to the front of the school. I looked around for my mom but she wasn't there. Her shift in the hospital must have run longer than she expected. This happens sometimes.
Since I had taken to long in the locker rooms no one was left in the courtyard as I sat and waited. Across the courtyard I heard a slight rustling in the leaves and turned my head toward the sound. I saw Shiloh walking out of the school with her head down. Almost as if she was hiding from something.
"Shiloh!" I called over to her.
Shiloh looked up and toward me. She stared at me for a few seconds and then started walking away. I scrambled to get up off the bench I was sitting on and tried to walk over to her, however I was in pain.
"Hey, Shiloh wait for me." I yelled to her.
Shiloh stopped and faced me. As I limped over to her her eyes hardened.
"What do you want Carter?" She asked me as she continued to look at me.
"I-I," I started but I didn't really know what I wanted, "I want you to forgive me."
"Why?"
"Because I don't want you to be mad at me." I almost reached out for her.
Shiloh is quiet for a few seconds before her eyes harden once again.
"Do you seek approval so much that you can't handle one person not worshipping your feet? Is your ego really that fragile?"
I didn't respond at first, I just stared in complete shock at the words that came out of Shiloh's mouth.
"I can handle not not having the approval of people but not you." I tried.
Shiloh's anger melted away.
"What are you still doing here Carter? You stink." Shiloh asked.
"Ouch. And I think the hospital made my mom stay and work late. What are you still doing at the school so late?"
"That's not important." Shiloh answered quickly.
"Right." I nod.
"Do you need a ride home?" Shiloh asked.
"I don't have a house key so I'd just be sitting outside waiting for my mom to get back. I think I can wait for her to pick me up." I explain.
"You can hang out at my house until she gets off work and take a shower because you smell."
"You have already acknowledged that and thank you Shiloh."
"No problem."
Shiloh is silent as we walked to her car. Her car is in even worse shape than mine is. It's covered in rust and mud.
"Yea it's not much. I'm saving up for a paint job though."
"Have you seen my car. This is nothing compared to the monstrosity that it is." I laughed.
"Come on. It can't be worse than my car."
"Believe me it's worse." I assured her.
Shiloh nodded as she slid into the driver's seat.
"When did you get your license?" I asked her because I was almost certain she was younger than me.
"Well I turned 16 in May but I got my license yesterday." Shiloh explained.
"Really? I could have sworn you were younger than me."
"When's your birthday?"
"Next week."
