My car broke down this morning so I had to call Shiloh to come pick me up and take me to school. Since my mom and I are broke we had to wait until her next paycheck to get my car fixed. That means that Shiloh has to drive me to and from school each day. It's been a little awkward between me and Shiloh ever since I voiced my opinions about not wanting her to date Shawn.
Shiloh was on her way of dropping me off and we were in dead silence. I decided, like an idiot, that it was a good time to bring up Shiloh's boyfriend and how it was a bad idea.
"Shiloh,"
"What do you want Carter?"
"I really don't think that it's a good idea for you to go on a date with Shawn."
"Carter, what is this about?"
"This came out of nowhere, Shi, are you sure that his intentions are good?"
"What are you trying to say?"
"What if he is going to hurt you."
"How? How would he hurt me?"
"By standing you up. Making you do things that you don't want to do."
"He's a nice guy, Noah. He wouldn't do that to me."
"You don't know that Shiloh. I don't want you to get hurt. Boys will only break your heart."
"So are you telling me I just need to go lesbian?"
"No, Shiloh, I don't trust him. He is going to hurt you."
"How are you so sure? Am I that unlovable?"
"That's not what I'm saying. Shiloh please listen to me."
"Give me three good reasons why I should decline his date."
"I can give you 5 good reasons. He-Will-Stand-You-Up."
"Stop, just stop Carter. I want to be happy."
"Boys, won't make you happier. You make yourself happy."
"Get out of the car." She whispered.
"What?"
"We are at your house."
I opened the car door. Shiloh looked really mad right now. When I walked inside the house seemed empty. It was really quiet which was odd because my mom was supposed to be home right now and she is generally a very loud person.
"Mom?" I yelled.
There was no answer so I continued into our living room. It was really dark in my house which was odd because my mom hated the dark. I was reaching for the lights when I got surprised.
"Noah!!!" A girl just jumped out from behind the couch.
"Woah!" I jumped back, startled.
"Surprise!" Everyone turned on the lights.
I looked around and recognized my mom and the girl who surprised me.
"Elie!" I took her into a breathtaking hug.
"Noah! How in the world did you get that tall?"
"He got it from his father and definitely not me." My mom smiled.
Elie was my cousin but I hadn't seen her in years. The last time I saw her was at Thanksgiving when I was 7. It was so strange that it was nearly a decade ago that I had seen her.
"Elie I missed you."
"Aw, I missed you too kid."
Elie was 5 years older than me so she was 21 this year I guess. While my mom was in nearly the Kitchen and Elie was right next to me I couldn't place the third person in the room. He was a young adult.
