Perhaps, I would have been a little less nervous if I hadn't given the responsibility of walking Maria to the altar.
"Marvin, you are getting nervous for no reason. You just have to walk me a few steps" Maria said to me, using my fake name 'Marvin' as I paced behind her in my gray tux and adjusting the annoying collar. I never thought a collar could annoy me this much.
"Easy for you to say. It is my first time going to be around so many dangerous people" I said.
Maria turned to me, interrupting the makeup artist from her work,"Easy for me!" She exclaimed "Tell me, have you ever heard of wedding jitters. Instead of you I must be the pacing one there. I am going to be one of the main focus of all the attention, not you. I am the one going to be judged by them, since Veena is such a known person among them. And last but not least, I'm marrying someone I'm going to be with, for my life long. You think it is easy."
I stopped pacing. God I was such a fool. Of course it was no less easy for her.
I went and sat beside her as the stylist finished her work and went away.
"Thank you, Mam" I called after her.
She shot me a surprised look and smiled at me with warmth and gratitude.
Seeing this Maria stood up and said "Please, be my guest and see my wedding"
The woman smiled happily and said, while seeing herself out "I will, Madam. Congratulations, on getting married"
Maria turned to me with an irritated look, as the stylist went away"You make me feel like, mannerless brute Leo" she said.
"Sorry" I said "And I am sorry"
She raised her eyebrows waiting for me to explain why I said that again.
"Well, I shouldn't have said that earlier. It is not easy for you at all. I am just out of my mind here. I haven't been this nervous, since my first ever interview. Or to say the truth I am emotional right now. I never had a family or parents. So I never even dreamed, I can do the honour of walking someone, which is usually done by family. I just can't believe you want me to! And knowing this I don't want to mess this up. I want to do this right and show you back the gratitude I feel for this. I'm a mess" I spoke out.
Her eyes widened. Well, I kept that grateful part to myself, right since the day before yesterday, when she told me about this. Now, I said it out loud.
She opened and then closed her mouth. She kept looking at me. Then suddenly the door opened and in came Ela in her trademark clothes.
I wanted to scold her, saying to show some respect of changing into suitable attire for a marriage.
But that stopped right on my lips as she caught me in her sight first, and looked me up and down. A smirk running on her face in appraisal. Then she turned to look at the bride.
She then stepped in and came straight to me "Well, first let me tell you Leo, you look like just made for the eyes to feast on. Now tell me Maria" she turned to her and asked "Why do you look like my Leo ate you and then throw you out?".
I kept gawking at Ela as I heard her words in my mind. Feast!! Feast! God was it sinful to think that I thought if it was Ela's eyes I won't mind, I .......never mind!
Maria sighed "Your boy! He feels like me letting him walk me, as someone gave him a chance at meeting the president. And he is worried that president wouldn't like how he walked to him." She rolled her eyes.
I scowled. I felt like I should defend myself "Ela, I just feel nervous. I have no family, I never thought I will get a chance like this. I'm just grateful and happy"
