As I sit on my bed talking to Nash on the phone, all I want to do is hang up.
All Nash talks about is his schoolwork, his parents, his hair, and his friends. The only thing that Nash doesn't bring up about himself is his brother.
"Why were you with Zane today?" Okay, I was wrong.
"He saw me walking to McDonalds, and gave me a ride."
"I don't want you hanging out with him." Nash states boldly.
"Since when can you tell me what to do?"
"Look Rae, I don't want you hanging out with my brother. He likes you, and I want you to myself."
Usually in this circumstance a girl would say something like, "Awhhh Nash that's so cute!" Or "That's adorable!" but I stupidly made the mistake of saying,
"Zane likes me?"
"Yeah? Look, what does it matter? I like you, and I'm obviously the better choice."
Why did this kid want me this bad? He'd spent one night with me, we didn't talk, we didn't do anything but lay in my bed and look at the ceiling... What's his draw?
"I find you overwhelmingly cute, and nice, and funny, and I know that I really like you." Nash says over the other line. I think he's trying to be cute... It's not working.
Nash switches topics and goes onto how great he is in football. After about an hour of wanting to rip my eyes out of the sockets from boredom, I hear a tap on my window.
"Nash, can you hold on? I think somebody is outside of my window..."
"Do you want me to come over?" He asks.
"No!" I snap quickly.
"Okay..."
I walk over to the window and draw back the curtians.
In front of my window stands a tall boy with blonde hair and a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, the ever-surprising, Zane.
"Nash, I'm gonna have to call you back."

If Zane Martian showed up at any other girl's house, she would probably have him in bed within 2.2 seconds of him putting out his stinky cigarette, and crawling through the window. Of this, I'm 99.9% sure.
But no, not in the house of Rae Manning! "Do you want to play a board game?"
Zane's face was priceless, "A board game?"
"You know... Like Monopoly?"
Zane laughed and ran a hand through his beautiful messy hair, "You know Rae, I would love to play a board game."
I walk to my closet and pull out checkers, walk back to where he's standing, sit down and start setting the game up, "Sit." I look up at him.
Zane takes off his shoes and sits down in front of where I'm sitting, "Who were you on the phone with?"
Another great time to lie, "Nash." Alright, I seriously need to work on my lying...
Zane's face goes cold, and he sits up straighter, "Oh."
I put the black pieces on his side, and the red pieces on my side, and look at him to start.
He moves one of his pieces, and then looks to me.
I move mine, then look to him.
"We're seriously playing a board game right now?" He smiles at me.
"Yes sir, board games are the way to go. I had to leave my x-box in Sonora."
Still playing the game, we make conversation, "You play?"
"Of course I play, I'm a freaking beast at COD."
Zane shakes his head, "I'd like to see you try and beat me! Nash used to get so mad when I'd kill him." Zane laughs, "I'd have killed him about 40 times, and he'd get so mad that he'd start crying and leave the room."
I can't help but laugh, "You mean the almighty Nash? Oh no, he's so great at everything."
Zane lets out a loud laugh and then covers his mouth, "So I was wrong," he smiles, "You're not under his spell."
"How could I be? The only words that ever exit his gaping hole of a mouth are, 'Nash' 'football' 'I' 'Me' and 'food'. Do you know how annoying that is?"
Zane shakes his head as he moves his piece on the board, "You forget that I've lived with him for 17 years."
"Has he always been this way?"
Zane puts his elbow on his leg that is crisscrossed, and puts his chin in his hand, he looked like a statue, something that should have been made by an architect in ancient Greece. "No, he used to have personality."
"What changed?"
"High school."
I nod my head and ponder my next move, I move my piece and Zane looks at me and smiles.
"How about we make this interesting?"
"How?" I raise a questioning eyebrow.
"If I win, you go on a date with me, if you lose, you get to choose my punishment."
Did he seriously just say that? Did those words literally leave his mouth? WHAT? "Like a legit date?"
"Like a legit date." He mimics my tone.
I look down at the board and realize that I have the chance to take one of his kings, I would only be one move away from winning the game...
"I guess that works." I say, moving my piece, and taking his king.
"Just as I suspected," He smiles at me. Zane picks up his king and with one move of his hand swipes all of the pieces off of the board. He places his king on my side, and smiles at me, "Checkmate."
"First of all, that's chess. Second of all, that's cheating."
"Who ever said I played fair?" He leans back and smiles even brighter at me, "So how about dinner and a movie?"
