Shut-In Christmas
Haunting all my memories
with their melodies serene
They stand outside this door of mine
with candles as they sing
What leaves were left have fallen
and hidden beneath the snow
The starlight brings a somber night
to the earthly scenes below
Why must heaven claim the right
with gracious violence and secrecy
to gather up all the fallen ones
in its auspicious mystery
Bones that ache in silence
through carols of youth and joy
wonder at this dichotic state
and the faith it must employ
Had this darkness on its own
visited a dying home
it would be easier to just let go
of the life that strife has known
But a love and light yet invades
on a shut-in Christmas day
to set a spirit ill at ease
as the music fades
My pent-up heart still wanders
My weary eyes yet see
Come back dearest carolers
Sing once more to me!
