Mid October.
"You know there is really nothing dignified about being pregnant." Jade grumbled as she laid back in the examination chair."Wait until you have to have your legs in the stirrups." I laughed and pointed at them.
She cringed and made a gagging sound, "Don't, I am not looking forward to that." She mumbled.
She'd asked me to come with her to her nine week scan, Andrew hadn't been able to get out of work, his manager told him he was the only one scheduled to work that day, so he couldn't leave, and Jade couldn't reschedule the appointment, she didn't seem too bothered though, she was told that they wouldn't be able to hear or see anything of significance this early, it was just a check up to make sure everything was ok. So she let it slide, she said she'd be pissed if it was an important one.
"What can you see on this scan?" I asked as I looked around the room, medical supplies and texts fascinating me.
"I'm not sure, they said not much, I really should start looking these things up I guess." She looked at the ceiling, deep in thought.
I jumped as the door opened and the doctor walked in.
She had short brunette hair and blue eyes that were as bright as the sky, she was tall and beautiful, even the white coat she was wearing couldn't hide her beautiful figure underneath.
"Jade Mass?" She questioned, looking up from her clipboard.
Jade beamed up at her and nodded enthusiastically. "Great, I'm Doctor Renford, I'm going to be with you through the whole of your beautiful journey. Do you have any questions before we get started today?" She asked briskly. She seemed efficient but not cold.
"About a thousand but I doubt you'd be able to help with any." Jade laughed as she rolled her eyes.
"Give it your best shot." Dr Renford smiled as she sat down on a wheely stool next to the bed, pulling the ultrasound machine closer to her.
"Why won't my boyfriend agree to find out the sex before he or she is born?" Jade asked, eyebrow raised.
"Ah I see, none medical questions, ok. Maybe you were right, I can't help with those." She laughed lightly, she put me at ease with her warmth, her energy was similar to Jades and that helped me relax. "You don't like surprises?" She asked.
"Surprise parties? Yes, surprise here is a candy bar I got you from the store without you asking, sure yes sign me up! Don't find out the sex of my first human child, no I'm not behind that surprise." Jade glared at me as I started laughing, I'd heard her and Drew bickering over it for days.
I was totally on Drew's side, sadly for Jade, so was Tom.
"Maybe you can talk him round before that scan then, you have a bit of time." Dr Renford lifted a bottle up and gave it a little shake, she lifted Jades t-shirt up slightly, "This will be a bit cold." She said as she squirted the gel onto Jade's pale stomach.
She lifted the transducer probe and pressed it against Jade, I glanced up at her face and she was smiling from ear to ear. She sensed me looking at her and looked up at me, the excitement in her blue eyes was almost contagious.
"Got it, ok have you been keeping track, size wise?" Dr Renford glanced from the screen to Jade.
"We've been using fruit and vegetable references." Jade giggled.
"That's perfect, so right now it's about a Green olive, can you see here." Dr Renford pointed to what to me looked like a smudge on the screen.
"Is it bad if I say that looks nothing like a baby, or am I supposed to be all motherly and be tearing up at the sight of my child for the first time?" Jade asked aloud, clearly worried about her own reaction.
